It’s nearly impossible to talk about the best lip balms without mentioning the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. The K-beauty brand’s little pink tub has sold out multiple times since it arrived in the U.S. a few years ago and is praised for saving dry, cracked lips. So no surprise, when Glamour readers were asked to weigh in on their all-time favorite balms for this year’s Glamour Beauty Awards, this took home the crown.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

As its name implies, the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is a leave-on mask that soothes and moisturizes lips overnight. Which is just a fancy way of saying it’s a really thick, nutrient-rich balm that goes to work to while you’re asleep (although it’s so good, I wear it 24/7). It’s got all the good things you want in a balm: hydrating hyaluronic acid, brightening vitamin C, and antioxidants that work together to form a barrier over your lips to lock in moisture. Plus, the flavors are incredible. It comes in vanilla, apple lime, grapefruit, and the original berry, which features a delicious-smelling blend of raspberry, strawberry, cranberry, and blueberry extracts (the latter is my fave).

The instructions ask you to apply a generous layer, which I do—and with reckless abandon. Most skin-care products require “just a tiny bit,” so being able to slather on as much as I want feels like a necessary indulgence.

Despite being thick and goopy, the balm sinks into my lips within 15 or so minutes. It’s not tacky at all, and it wears off slowly as you sleep. You’re supposed to gently wipe or wash it off in the morning, but I rarely do. My desert-dry lips just soak up all of it—every night without fail.

I usually stash different lip balms in my coat pockets and bags, but the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is the one product I can actually rely on to do the work. It comes with a small applicator, which is my least favorite part about it since I find it hard to clean afterward, so I tend to use a cotton swab instead. And actually, since our lips are relatively small compared to our faces, the tub lasts for months. (For the record, I’ve had mine for over a year.)

I’m usually to hard please when it comes to lip stuff. I need something that doesn’t dry out my lips more (I’m constantly licking them, although I know I shouldn’t) but is also low-maintenance. Bonus points if it looks pretty on my top shelf. My one gripe with other lip masks or scrubs is that it’s a whole process. You have to scoop, scrub, wipe, rinse…it’s too much. I just want something I can put on and forget about. Luckily, this is it for me.

And even though there’s no kissing happening once I have it on, the baby-soft, smooth lips I get in the morning are totally worth it for me—and clearly, for 13,000 other Glamour readers too.

When I first saw this product in an promotional email, I thought to myself, what a brilliant concept! How is it even possible that a sleeping mask dedicated for the lip area never existed?! Of course I had to ask the friend who was off to Seoul to bring me back this pot of wonder, because back then I haven’t yet had The Sesame Shop. I have been using this Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask for a little over 3 months now and would like to share with you my thoughts on it.

Background

My lip is dry. No matter how oily my nose is, my lip has always been quite dry. I keep a lip balm in every room I exist and apply them hourly to battle this dryness. Before using the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, I have the habit of applying a layer of Etude House’s Lip Perfume before bedtime each night. I particularly love its grapefruit scent and the ointment texture. When I finished the pot, I was looking to purchase another one, but then I saw the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. The thought of being able to keep my lip moisturised all night excites me! Laneige was the producer of the well-known Water Sleeping Pack, therefore it totally made sense for them to extend the line to lip care. While I didn’t quite like the Water Sleeping Mask, I was still intrigued to try the Lip Sleeping Mask, and it definitely did not disappoint.

Packaging

The Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask comes in a glass jar with a matte finish and a gradient berry red colour. It is housed in a white and blue cube box, appeared refreshing. The box also contained a little pamphlet for product details and a mini spatula. While I adore the mini spatula, I didn’t find myself using it. I normally just apply with my fingers.

Colour

The mask is of a creamy baby pink colour in the jar and when applied to the lips, it is almost clear.

Scent

I love the smell of this product. It was described as a mixture of berries by Laneige, but I smell strawberry ice-cream! Sweet and slightly tangy. I believe the scent contributes largely to my willingness of consistently using it every night.

Texture

Before receiving the product, I imagined the texture to be similar to Laneige’s Water Sleeping Pack, slimy and slightly tacky. I’m glad that it is not. It is more of the texture of an ointment, similar to Vaseline and the popular Lucas Papaw Ointment.

Volume

I would like to make a special note about this product’s volume, because after three months of daily usage, I made a dent about the size of a 20-cent coin in the jar. I believe this 20g jar could easily last me a year, which makes it well worth the $25 price tag.

Results

After all, how did the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask actually perform? Well, the fact that I used it continuously for three months says a lot about it. It definitely does what I wanted to achieve, that is, lasting hydrated lips. Although it does get absorbed or evaporated after some time, it leaves my lip in a soft, hydrated state. I notice my lip doesn’t crave for lip balm as often after I used it. But best of all, I love using it! I love the delicious strawberry ice-cream scent on my lips, and consistency helps greatly improving the conditions of my lips this winter.

Verdict

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is definitely something that encourages me to take care of my lips each night. If you are like me who cannot live without lip balms, you will like this Lip Sleeping Mask.

Are Laneige lip masks worth it?

The mask kept my lips feeling nourished for hours, and when a couple of my friends actually asked what lip gloss I was wearing, they were shocked to find out that it was actually a mask. I've now been using the product for almost a month, and I'm still blown away by the results.

The draw of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is its ability to provide a moisture surge not just overnight, but instantly. While you can certainly apply its cocktail of a fruit complex, vitamin C, coconut oil, shea, and murumuru butter just before bed, many users find it useful for daily wear.
