Established by the Australian medical missionaries Dr Helen and Sister Catherine Mackenzie, the Ilsin Women's Hospital changed the course of midwifery and obstetrical practices in Korea. In the making of Ilsin as one of the principal reference maternity centres in Korea, there was a group of unassuming local people - among them, widows of the Korean War, refugees from North Korea and single mothers - who joined the sisters in their vision of bringing quality medical help to those who needed it the most. They worked unfailingly to stem, continue and perpetuate the sisters' ideals. And it is thanks to them that Ilsin continued to thrive even after the sisters' departure from Korea. This is the story of Ilsin's steadfast companions who gave incalculable aid, assistance and encouragement to the Mackenzie sisters in their mission of building a better society: a mission that brought out the best of Australia and Korea which shows that two countries, through mutual understanding and cooperation, can achieve a lasting outcome that overcomes all imaginable barriers. According to a report from the Korean Software Policy and Research Institute, the Griffith AI team was ranked world's top 17 (Harvard 23). GU has been working with KARI and Korean space companies very actively on satellite data over the last five years. As the Australian Space Agency was launched in 2018 and the space industry grows in Australia, the interest and demand of collaboration are also growing very fast in this field. The Australia-Korea Space Forum (AKSF) was successfully held at both GU (Australia) and KARI (Korea) with the support of the AKF2020 grant in June 2021. Based on the strengths of both countries and demands after the AKSF event, this project will build an industry forum which can produce practical and tangible results. The key aim of this project is to support the development and expansion of primary and secondary school Korean language education in Western Australia. In addition to supporting the teaching of Korean to new cohorts of students in WA through assisting schools to gain external support and coordinating with qualified teachers of Korean, the project team will conduct interviews and policy research with key stakeholders in the state to scope out the key barriers and support needs for successful Korean language education programs. Recognising the current shortage of Korean language learning opportunities in WA schools, the project will also provide free Korean language education and learning support through Curtin University's Innovative Student Scholars Program (ISSP) to high school students who wish to study for a Korean ATAR but have no such option available in their own school. By continuing with the traditional approach to mining such critical minerals, research has demonstrated that as demand surges, markets will be dominated by countries that have access to available resources. In comparison to other countries (e.g Australia), Korea is resource constrained and to reduce the dependence on imports, Korea adopts an aggressive approach to recycling rare earth metals through innovative science and technological solutions. This project seeks to showcase each countries activities, excellence and directions in characterising, processing and recycling rare earth metals, to share knowledge, and to develop and strengthen partnerships. The Symposium will be delivered online and will include an online networking component. Digital recordings of the event and a follow-up report will be made publicly available to share key learnings and deepen impact. Korea is an important source of international students for Australian higher education as well as university mobility and exchange programs. Australia-Korea schools partnerships, however, have not reached their full potential and are primarily focused on inbound study tours to Australia. Before COVID-19, Australia-Asia school partnerships had been growing, particularly in China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. The 2023 festival, to be held in Adelaide's beautiful inner-city Botanic Park from Friday 10 March until Monday 13 March, will showcase a stunning, diverse program of more than 60 groups from over 25 countries, including the Australian premiere and exclusive performances from Korea's ADG7. Founded in 2015, ADG7 are critically acclaimed for their culturally unique shows, bringing together Korean folk traditions using Minyo (folk singing), Gut (ritual tradition), instruments such as the daegeum (bamboo flute), piri and saenghwang (wind instruments), ajaeng and gayageum (string instruments) and multiple percussion instruments such as janggu, gwwanggari, jing and buk. The young band are renowned for their vibrant, highly visual and thoroughly entertaining live shows. Activities during the South Korean delegations' visit in February 2023 will create evidence-based outcomes of people-to-people links, as described in the recent Australia-Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The project outcomes will be made available to the wider audience in both Korean and English. Most of the South Korean researchers and advocates involved in this project have previously completed their research degrees in Australia. This bold new dance theatre work will explore the similarities and difference between our two cultures, what brings us together and what separates us while celebrating diversity and cultural collaboration on the world stage. Through online technologies and face to face rehearsals, the creative teams will blur the boundaries of separate identities and cultural barriers to create a new work for screen, live music and live performance. Technology has become embedded in our lives before technology have been embedded into our legal frameworks. These new technologies bring extraordinary opportunities, but also new challenges, especially with respect to regulation and governance. This project will support a partnership between the Korean Development Institute (KDI) and the Tech Policy Design Centre (TPDC) at the Australian National University. Building upon the Australia-Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the Australia-Korea Memorandum of Understanding on Cyber and Critical Technology Cooperation, KDI and TPDC will conduct joint research and hold public consultations in Australia and Korea to identify specific technologies and policy issues for which Australia and Korea have competitive advantages in cooperating to advance our shared interests.
