Going for $199 SGD, The Logitech C922 PRO HD webcam is definitely not cheap. Yet, I would say: Invest in it! Read on to find out why:

Why would I need to buy a webcam?

There are a few reasons why. First, most laptops (especially windows laptops) come with decent (mostly poor) quality webcams built inside them. There’s nothing that lowers your confidence more than seeing yourself looking pale and noisy on video, while trying to convey your point to the other party via Zoom or Google meet.

The second reason is more obvious: some laptops don’t even come with a webcam built in at all! my Asus G513 Laptop has nice narrow bezels that makes the laptop looks sleek, but it achives that by omitting the webcam (a big bummer, really)

As I found myself going on zoom quite frequently, I soon felt the need to buy a high quality webcam.

After doing some research, I decided on the Logitech C922 Pro.

Unboxing and Key Specifications

First off, the specs: a full HD webcam capable of 30 FPS, with a bonus function of being able to record at 720P at 60 FPS. This is definitely a step up from the older Logitech C920 webcam, with Logitech seeming to promise better lowlight capabilities on this one.

Unboxing the unit was a simple affair: you get the webcam small but rugged tripod, coupon code for XSplit, a green screen app, as well as your standard fare of instruction manuals and safety notes.

I’ve been using the Logtiech C922 Pro since December 2020, so this review will encompass my full experience with it.

Build Quality

The Logitech C922 is solidly built, with high quality plastic parts. The most obvious “extra feature” that comes with this webcam would be the two beamforming mics, which flank the sides of the webcam. These capture decent quality sound and are good enough for most video conferencing needs.

The optics are of high quality. The first thing you’ll notice is that the lens (the circle part inside the webcam) is quite a lot bigger than most laptop webcams, which allows the webcam to capture more light. This allows it to capture better videos with less noise and better colors, which I will demonstrate in a video at the next section.

The webcam design also goes a step further to make sure that you can use it in almost any computer environment. The webcam has a built-in stand which allows it to perch easily on top of a laptop or computer monitor. Should you desire a different camera angle, the built-in stand supports a standard tripod mount mechanism, which allows it to be mounted not only on the bundled small tripod, but also on a standard size camera tripod.

My only gripe with this webcam is that it uses a USB-A cable that is hardwired onto the camera. in other words, should you break the cable, you could render this webcam useless. In addition, this also means that you will not be able to use it with USB C type devices, such as a 2019 MacBook, without a USB-A to USB-C adapter (not included in the box). This is a potentially frustrating aspect that should be considered if you have a minimalistic laptop.

Image and Video Quality

The image and video quality of this camera is one of this webcam’s best aspects and should beat most other webcams out there. For video calls in normal office and home environments, the image quality is excellent, and is visibly better than even the best built in webcams in a laptop. My face appears on screen with noticeably clearer visuals and great color reproduction.

Where this webcam really excels at is in low light conditions. Even in a dark environment, the video still looks clear, with minimal noise. Recently, I’ve been using this to create guitar cover videos in low light, with really satisfactory results. here’s a recent video of me covering “RED” by Taylor Swift on the electric guitar. This video was shot with the Logitech C922 Pro 😁”

All I did was a bit of post processing to enhance the colors and contrast. With such good low light performance, you can be confident that this webcam will be able to capture good videos under office lighting, without a hitch. In proper lighting conditions, Video quality never comes across as noisy or mediocre.

In fact, the Image quality is so good, you probably don’t need a better webcam than the Logitech C922 Pro. Video conferencing apps, such as Zoom and Google meet are unable to transmit videos higher than high definition anyway, making the more expensive 4K video webcams quite unnecessary for most users, unless you are using it in very specialized circumstances, such as using the camera to zoom into a specific person speaking in a large meeting room, or for ultimate Twitch/Youtube streaming.

Software

The Logitech G Hub Software lets you unlock more from your C922 Pro, with image fine tuning and zoom functions.

The Logitech G Hub software is also really good. You don’t have to install the software to run the webcam. However, the software helps to unlock more from the webcam, by allowing you to fine tune the white balance and contrast, and even zoom into the image more, should you prefer to look larger on screen.

Price and Final Thoughts

At its RRP of $199, The Logitech C922 is not cheap. However, you do get what you pay for, with excellent image quality that is not only sufficient for video conferencing, but also able to double up as a high quality video recording device in a pinch. As such, I would highly recommend getting the Logitech C922 webcam.
