Can I run Premiere Pro on i3?

First off, there is no 11th-Gen i3 desktop CPU. When the 11th-Gen CPUs were introduced over a year ago, only the i5, i7 and i9 were ever released in 11th-Gen. The i3 only got a 10th-Gen refresh with higher base clock speeds.

Second, coming from a 7th-Gen i5, the 10th-Gen i3 refresh isn't worth the total cost of that upgrade as you'd be updating your PC from a quad-core CPU to another quad-core CPU that uses basically the same CPU architecture. You'd be spending a whopping $300+ for the total cost of your planned upgrade just to add hyperthreading to your existing PC. Plus, a new motherboard would be required for that 10th-Gen i3 as the socket that it uses is physically incompatible with your current motherboard.

And this is all because Intel has gotten complacent during the years between 6th-Gen and 10th/11th-Gen. Intel had been basically keeping everything the same during those five years, which drove a lot of people to AMD CPUs during that time frame.

Why stop there when you can get a much more substantial CPU performance upgrade for just a few dollars more? I am suggesting instead a 10th- or 11th-Gen i5 CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads, versus that 10th-Gen i3's 4 cores and 8 threads, as a more worthwhile upgrade to your current 4-core/4-thread CPU system.

And whichever CPU you choose, if you're not going to carry over an existing discrete graphics card (GPU) to your new system, or you're not planning to buy a new discrete GPU with your upgrade, then skip all of the CPUs that have an "F" in the model number as those CPUs absolutely require a discrete GPU just to even function at all.

With that laptop your editing experience will be rather frustratingly sluggish: All mobile i3 CPUs are still only dual-core, which I had already demonstrated a couple of years ago to be woefully inadequate for even 1080p/23.976, let alone 4k, video editing.

Are you a filmmaker, animator, or YouTube hobbyist? We're happy to help you choose a laptop you can use for video editing. We've listed which specifications you need for which programs so you can find the best laptop for you.

  5. Personal advice in the stores

Working with video editing programs

To edit and render videos, you work with programs like Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, and Pinnacle. Or with Final Cut Pro on MacBook models. Each one of these programs is demanding, and that asks a lot from your laptop. Are you looking for a laptop you can easily get started with video editing on? When you make your choice, keep the following specifications in mind.

  • Processor: at least Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7
  • RAM: at least 8GB
  • Screen: at least full HD (1920x1080)

Processor, RAM, and screen resolution

Choose an Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processor if you want to get started with demanding programs for video editing. This allows you to render video files without any problems.

If you work with demanding programs, having enough RAM ensures that these programs run smoothly. That's why we recommend a laptop with 8GB RAM or more.

For the screen, you need a Full HD resolution at least. Movies are increasingly being recorded in 4K, so also consider choosing a laptop with a 4K screen with IPS panel for an even sharper image.

A dedicated video card or not?

To render, edit, and play videos, your laptop needs some extra power from a dedicated video card. For example an NVIDIA GeForce, Quadro series, AMD Radeon, or FirePro series video card. This makes video editing software run a bit more smoothly and makes your movies render faster, especially in 4K. It's not a requirement, because the processor does most of the work. But it's a nice bonus.

Video editing for beginners

If you don't really need demanding and complex software or if you have a smaller budget, there are a number of alternatives you can consider. You could start with Adobe Premiere Elements, which is basically Premiere Pro for beginners. MacBook users can use iMovie, which is a good alternative.

Editing videos on a Chromebook

Are you looking for a Chromebook, but you want to edit videos on it? You can. Use apps from the Google Play Store like PowerDirector, or an online program like WeVideo. Keep in mind that you can't install software on a Chromebook that you can install on a Windows laptop or MacBook, as we mentioned earlier. The same applies to a laptop with the Windows 10 S operating system.
