History of the Cannes Film FestivalThe history of the Cannes Film Festival began in Venice in 1938. Not happy that the Mostra prize was awarded to a Nazi-inspired documentary, Americans and British decided to boycott the event. Philippe Erlanger therefore had the idea of organizing a rival festival in France. The Cannes Film Festival is today the most mediatized event in the world after the Olympic Games. PrizesMany are the prizes that are awarded during these 12 days, however the feature films presented to the jury are the most mediatized prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. Since 1955, the Palme D’Or has remained the most prestigious award at the Cannes Film Festival, which is none other than the prize of the best film in the competition. Numerous prizes are awarded by the jury, made up of great personalities from the world of cinema: Grand Prize, Jury Prize, Prize for best actor, Prize for actress, best director or even Prize for best screenplay. Constitution of the JuryEvery year, the Palais des Festival brings together personalities from all over the world. The selection of the jury is made under the supervision of Thierry Frémaux, president and Managing Director. Any person who has participated in the production of the film can obviously not be part of the jury. The Cannes Film Festival offers a scintillating panorama of the elite of the third art for two weeks. Between awards, glitter, stars, and glamour, it has become the unmissable event for all cinema lovers from all around the world since 1949. With the 75th season about to get underway, the international Festival de Cannes is one of the world's most widely publicized events and certainly the most important film festival in terms of worldwide impact. We put ten questions to Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate since 2007, on what the Festival de Cannes means today. Cinema lovers can also explore the world of cinema in different ways by attending masterclasses, tributes, or exhibitions which make up the Events of an edition. In 2021, for example, the "Rendez-vous" sessions gave festival-goers the chance to spend time in the company of such exceptional artists as Bong Joon-ho, Matt Damon, Steve McQueen, and Isabelle Huppert, as well as Marco Bellocchio and Jodie Foster, who were awarded an Honorary Palme d'or for lifetime achievement. The most important work, but also the least visible, is done by the "head hunters", who search all over the world and at festivals in order to find the most promising directors. Where do short films fit in at Cannes? What initiatives has the Festival set up to encourage film production? The Festival is very keen to discover new talent and act as a springboard for creation. The most important (and least visible) task is performed by the team’s Selection Committee. These talent-seekers travel the world and scour film festivals each year to unearth the most promising directors and bring a fresh look to the Official Selection. As the Festival has developed over the years, a number of initiatives designed to promote the talents of the future have already been introduced: the Caméra d’or is awarded to the best film presented either in the Official Selection, during Directors’ Fortnight or during the Semaine de la Critique, while the "Jeune Cinéma" section presents film school works in the LA CINEF selection and organises the Residence and the Workshop. The development of ‘Cannes Short Films’ is another step in this direction. Together, these initiatives enable us to act as an observatory for the trends shaping the cinema of the future. What

Does the Marché du Film represent the economic side of the Festival de Cannes? What does the Festival do for the general public? A film’s success and its director’s reputation depend above all on how it is received in cinemas. Despite being an event for film professionals only, the Festival is mindful of this reality and is taking steps to improve the way it reaches film enthusiasts. In 2018, we began "Three days in Cannes", as encouraging the future love of cinema also forms part of the Festival’s missions. The scheme involves inviting young people aged between 18 and 28 to the beginning and end of the festival to discover films from the Official Selection. It was so successful that it has been made an annual event. In 2019, it joined with the "Cannes Cinephiles" programme to welcome more than 7,000 fans to its cinemas.
