The lack of a mid-game save aside, PoA is great fun to play - not only does it have the necessary hook to keep you interested in what happens next, but it manages to perfectly reproduce the atmosphere of the Apes films.

In spite of decent fight graphics and a solid audio track, this PC release manages only minimal intrigue, and game play that stagnates in the dark corridors that play out as the game&

146;s map board.

Hardcore types probably won't care for it, but the more mainstreamers might be interested in a little monkey business.

This is a pretty bad game that has endless sprawling caves as gameplay areas and equally dull gameplay within them.

Whatever redeeming aspects it may have had are marred by a plethora of inconveniences and annoyances that round out boring, repetitive play.

It&

146;s exactly the kind of cookie-cutter movie spin-off we could easily survive without. [Holiday 2001, p.88]

As a game, Planet of the Apes fails utterly. As a skeet target, it succeeds in spades. Someone shout, "Pull!" [May 2002, p.84]

Summary Assume the role of Ulysses, a deep-space astronaut shipwrecked on a future planet populated with a breed of intelligent apes who rule the civilization. Ulysses must infiltrate the simian society and halt general Ursus's genocidal plans.

After Hidden Agenda, here's this week's second entry in the "sub-David Cage" category of cinematic narrative games - although that categorisation is halfway unfair to both. Hidden Agenda is boring and misconceived, but structurally innovative; Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier doesn't exactly explore these themes - in fact, it's careful to look for equivalence between ape and man - but it does inherit the surprisingly serious moral tone of the films, and this fits its simple survival storyline well. What an irony and a shame, then, that the person who is left dehumanised by this game - pushing buttons to no effect, thinking and responding to what's happening, but feeling ignored - is the player.

The apes are charismatic and the storyline is passable, but this interactive drama tie-in forgets to find a role to cast the player in.

The Imaginati Studios' first game is an interesting experiment. Unfortunately, its façade of consequence and choice falls apart on repeat sessions

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is an exciting narrative adventure that fans of the recent film trilogy will love. Its biggest drawback is perhaps how little interaction you actually have with it and that some of your choices make no difference to the game's direction, but as a fantastic-looking, branching story in a loved world, there's nothing else quite like it.

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is the perfect fusion between film and video games as it moves away from other games of the franchise and focuses on the narrative. In this way, it offers us a completely different point of view of the war between apes and humans.

As an animation movie, Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier would be better. Understanding this product as a videogame, we believe that it is quite limited and we only have a couple of dialogue options to choose, being irrelevant in most cases.

A glossy though ultimately shallow use of the Planet of the Apes license, Last Frontier stands as an acceptable use of Play Link technology but little else.

While this game is a good addition to the existing lore of the Planet of the Apes franchise, it offers little in terms of actual gameplay. The plot of the game is strong, but it's just not enough to totally carry the experience. Final Frontier feels like a valiant attempt at storytelling in a new environment, but it just doesn't quite stick the landing.

Far too many times, the game moved the plot forward through a story beat that I specifically chose not to explore, instead opting for the other side of the tale.
