Cấu trúc: mệnh đề If được chia ở thì hiện tại đơn (present simple), mệnh đề chính chia ở thì tương lai đơn:

If + present simple, will / won’t + V (bare infinitive)

Cách dùng: diễn tả một sự thật, tình huống có thể xảy ra trong hiện tại hoặc tương lai và kết quả của nó.

Ví dụ: If we use public transport, we won’t pollute our planet.

Lưu ý: Động từ khiếm khuyết có thể sử dụng thay cho will: be going to, can, could, may, might, shall, should, have to và ought to.

• We might prevent future disasters if we stop polluting the environment.

Đảo ngữ

Sử dụng cấu trúc đảo ngữ với should để biểu thị sắc thái trang trọng:

Cấu trúc: mệnh đề If được chia ở thì quá khứ đơn (past simple), mệnh đề chính chia theo cấu trúc would + V (bare infinitive)

If + past simple, would + V (bare infinitive)

Cách dùng: diễn tả hành động, tình huống không có thật ở hiện tại hoặc khó có thể xảy ra trong tương lai, và giả định kết quả của hành động, tình huống đó.

Ví dụ: If it didn’t rain, we would go picnic.

Lưu ý:

1. Trong mệnh đề If, động từ were được sử dụng cho mọi chủ ngữ, bất kể số ít hay số nhiều.

Ví dụ: If she were taller, she would be eligible for that competition.

1. Câu điều kiện loại 2 cũng được dùng để đưa ra lời khuyên, bắt đầu bằng: If I were you, …

Ví dụ: If I were you, I would eat more vegetables.

Cấu trúc:

Were + S + to V (bare infinitive), S + would/could/might + V (bare infinitive).

Cấu trúc và cách dùng

Cấu trúc: mệnh đề If chia ở thì quá khứ hoàn thành, mệnh đề chính chia theo cấu trúc would + have + V (past participle)

If + past perfect, would + have + V (past participle)

Cách dùng: diễn tả tình huống, hành động không có thật, không xảy ra trong quá khứ, và giả định kết quả của hành động, tình huống đó.

Ví dụ: If he had brought a raincoat, he wouldn’t have got wet.

Lưu ý: Có thể sử dụng could và might thay cho would

Ví dụ: If I hadn’t been busy, I could have go to the station to see her off.

Đảo ngữ

Cấu trúc:

Had + S + (not) V(past participle), S + would + have + V (past participle)

Ví dụ: If I had followed the doctor’s advice, I wouldn’t have been ill.

Sử dụng câu điều kiện sai với mục đích, ngữ cảnh

Người học thường bị nhầm lẫn mục đích cũng như ngữ cảnh mà từng loại câu điều kiện được sử dụng. Cách khắc phục lỗi này cụ thể như sau:

Dựa vào thì của câu đề bài

Người học có thể dựa vào thì của đề bài để xác định loại câu điều kiện sẽ sử dụng

• Thì hiện tại ==> Câu điều kiện loại 0, loại 1, loại 2
• Thì quá khứ ==> Câu điều kiện loại 3

Dựa vào nghĩa của câu đề bài

Sau khi xác định dựa vào thì, người học phải dựa vào ngữ nghĩa để xác định đúng loại câu điều kiện. Cụ thể:

• Câu diễn tả sự thật hiển nhiên ==> Câu điều kiện loại 0
• Câu diễn tả tình huống có thể xảy ra trong tương lai ==> Câu điều kiện loại 1
• Câu diễn tả tình huống trong hiện tại ==> giải định ngược lại ==> Câu điều kiện loại 2
• Câu diễn tả tình huống ở quá khứ ==> giả định ngược lại ==> Câu điều kiện loại 3

Chia sai thì của động từ

Một lỗi sai thường gặp khác là việc chia sai thì của động từ trong câu điều kiện. Cách khắc phục lỗi này như sau:

• Ghi nhớ cấu trúc của câu điều kiện

Cấu trúc câu điều kiện là kiến thức cơ bản, nền tảng để làm các bài tập vận dụng. Vì vậy, người học cần phải ghi nhớ các cấu trúc, đặc biệt là các thì của mệnh đề trong câu để chia thì của động từ một cách phù hợp.

• Ghi nhớ các cấu trúc khác của If
