Who Is iOS 9.3.5 For?

As with all iOS 9.x releases, iOS 9.3.5 is designed for the iPhone 4S or later, iPad 2 or later, iPad mini or later, iPad Pro range and the 5th generation iPod touch or later. Users are automatically prompted to upgrade, but if you don’t yet have a notification you can manually trigger it by going to Settings > General > Software Update

As always, the size of iOS updates differ significantly depending on your device. In the case of iOS 9.3.5 it is typically weighing in at 20MB to 50MB.

The Deal Breakers

iOS 9.3.5 continues where iOS 9.3.4 left off: it also blocks the recent Pangu jailbreak but in new ways (more in the next section).

For jailbreaking fans this will be very frustrating as the two big jailbreaking teams, Pangu and TaiG, only just managed to open up iOS 9.3.3 after failing to have any success since iOS 9.1 in October.

Aside from this, users in Apple’s official Support Communities forum are reporting some isolated incidents since upgrading to iOS 9.3.5. These include issues with Apple CarPlay, App updates, volume levels, battery drain, lost calendar appointments and Bluetooth. Currently all remain isolated, but should this change I will update.

So What Do You Get?

Curiously Apple’s release notes for iOS 9.3.5 are identical to iOS 9.3.4 simply saying: "iOS 9.3.5 provides an important security update for your iPhone or iPad and is recommended for all users."

But the wording is a little misleading as The New York Times reports the update contains patches for three security vulnerabilities which could be used to both intercept communications and (more helpfully) jailbreak an iPhone.

Security firm Lookout says breaks them down, saying the exploits could be triggered via malicious SMS messages and believes the exploit may have existed within core Apple core as far back as iOS 7.

This aside, there is nothing else in iOS 9.3.5, not even the usual talk of general performance upgrades and refinements.

Apple iOS 9.3.5 Install Verdict: Remain Cautious For Now

Right now there are good reasons to both install and ignore iOS 9.3.5.

The obvious pro is to patch the SMS vulnerabilities and that is undoubtedly a good thing. But users should be cautious given there are several problems being reported with the update by Apple users.

With iOS 10 launching next week many should not be unduly worried by this, but owners of the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPod 5th gen should be very careful as they will not get iOS 10. So taking on an update with bugs that will never be fixed is the last thing you need.
