ICA 2023 submission deadline

The Human-Machine Communication Interest Group supports and promotes scholarship regarding communication between people and technologies designed to enact the role of communicators (i.e., artificial intelligence (AI), robots, digital assistants, smart and Internet of Things (IoT) devices). HMC encompasses research within Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), and Human-Agent Interaction (HAI) and related areas of study focused on how people make sense of machines as communicators; the implications of people’s interactions with communicative technology for individuals, organizations, and society; and the philosophical and critical critique of the design of these technologies and their integration into daily life. HMC also includes the study of the discourse surrounding communicative technologies and people’s communication with them. The HMC Interest Group is inclusive of the different theoretical and methodological approaches in communication research.

Call for papers for HMC Pre-Conference 2023 in Toronto, submission deadline is January 31

Election Results for HMC Interest Group (2022)

We congratulate the elected candidates of the 2022 election:

• Secretary: Andrew Prahl, Nanyang Technological U 
• Student and Early Career Representative: Caroline van Straten, U of Amsterdam 
• International Liaison: Kun Xu, U of Florida

Unless otherwise indicated, candidates elected in the Fall 2022 election serve a two-year term beginning Monday, 29 May 2023 (the last day of the 73rd annual ICA conference in Toronto, Canada) and ending with the conclusion of the 2025 conference in Denver, Colorado, USA.

We look forward to working together to tell more people about this amazing community of scholars and maintaining our strong sense of community, which is kind and open to all kinds of scholarship.

In May 2022 (at the 72nd annual ICA conference), we counted 333 members. This is an enormous growth from the Blue Sky Workshop in 2015 (24 to 30 participants) and the 90 signatures needed in 2019. Importantly, we are a diverse group in terms of geographical spaces, methods, and epistemologies. Members come from 20 to 25 different countries. Our Interest Group is being praised for being 50.4% not US; out of all Divisions/Interest Groups we currently rank fourth in this respect.

The International “Meet the lab” event 2022. This is a networking event, to be organized in
December 2022, which is planned to bring together HMC researchers, university departments
carrying out HMC work, and HMC labs worldwide who would like to showcase their work
and/or find possible collaborations or meaningful feedback about their work.
The event aims to include scholars throughout the world and help them to reach out to
each other outside of the main ICA conference. The event is member-focused and intends to
serve the members of our interest group. It is open to all scholars at any stage in their careers.

Designed as an international, interdisciplinary hub, Human-Machine Communication will publish high-impact scholarship examining human-machine communication from a breadth of methodological, theoretical, and philosophical/critical angles to bring further visibility, legitimacy, and community to this newly emergent locus of scholarly and public interest. The journal is the result of collective organizing around recent pre-conferences and workshops at the International Communication Association (ICA), Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR), and ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). It is clear there is tremendous scholarly energy converging around this topic matter.
