The lens works great and as I stated way better than I thought. Was perfect for me and my old D3000 and what I use it for. Had thought about upgrading to newer camera but wasn't anything wrong other than needed a lens for some distance.

I love this lens as it is a mid range lens that I don't have to change out too often, took good pics of wildlife and also a few good portraits and landscapes.. very multi tasking, banged it on a rock pretty hard and it didn’t hurt it a bit.. yay

I love this Nikon lens. Good quality. Good price.

Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2018

This is a very good budget zoom lens, although a stretch to call it a good lens at any price.

Image quality, sharpness, low light capabilities, etc. are all about average. Nothing is going to wow you with this lens. Its pretty middle of the road, which was my expectation. IQ, sharpness, etc., could definitely be better. Overall, it is a serviceable lens in these respects. This part is a bit subjective, so I will leave it at that.

The AF/MF is a mixed bag. The AF motor is rather loud. Not so much that people around will think you have a "device," but just saying. It makes a lot more noise than my AF-P kit lenses. Also, there are less options in camera (D5600) for AF drive modes for AF-S, and the AF-P lenses are more capable in this respect. The focusing speeds are comparable to other budget lenses. Other than being noisy, the AF is good enough. The MF is not great. In fact, its poor. The MF ring feels like cheap china junk. It does not have that fluid dampened feeling like the AF-P kit lenses. Its loose and rickety by design. Also, the range is very short, which makes it hard to fine tune a manual focus. Finally, if you the AF is switched on, you cannot MF override by use of the ring. The ring becomes locked. The AF-P kit lenses do not do this. You can be in AF mode, but then also make a MF fine adjustment on the fly. This is a little annoying. I wouldn't say a dealbreaker, but definitely annoying.

Weight is also a consideration for me. Its rather a big consideration. Weight is what keeps me away from the 18-140 VR, and other very wide focal range lenses. Yes, it would be convenient to just bring one lens with a wider focal range vs two each with smaller ranges. But the 18-140 VR (490g) is quite a bit heavier than the 18-55 VR (205g) or 55-200 VR. (300g). It almost weighs as much as both combined. I would rather the lens on the camera be light, even if it means carrying a second (or more) lens in a backpack or whatever as I am always committed to bringing the backpack anyway. I also dont mind sacrificing photographic capabilities for lower weight. It works better for me in my hand, on a sling, or hung around my neck, and that is what keeps me shooting. This was perhaps the main reason I chose the D5600 over the D7500. If the whole package is too heavy, I am not bringing it with me and therefore getting no shots. If you are like me, you will love the lighter weight of the 55-200 VR despite its shortcomings.

Overall, for a budget lens, its a solid choice. Not going to take the best pictures, but good enough for general photography. The MF does suck big time. But, the light weight is a huge plus for people like me. Its pretty hard to argue against getting this lens at under one forty, so I would say low price is also a huge plus. If you are ok with bringing two or more lenses but also want to keep the bag and camera light, this lens a great choice. I really want to rate it 4.5 stars, with a half star deduction for the poor MF.

I'd actually give this 4.5 stars, but I'm willing to round up since another reviewer gave 1 star when shipped an older version of the lens. (That should be a 1-star against the shipper, not this product. I received the Feb 2015 version of this lens with gold VR and "1:4-5.6G II ED".)

Pros: for the price point, this is a very sharp telephoto zoom lens. If you've got the common 18-55mm kit lens, this is the perfect companion for anyone wanting more zoom. The zoom action is smooth and there is no signs of creep since the lens is quite lightweight. VR II seems to work nicely for hand-held shots, although I haven't had the lens for a week, so I haven't taken a lot of shots with it yet. Auto-focus speed seems fine, although maybe I'm more patient than some.

Cons: This has a plastic bayonet mount rather than metal, and it only has Auto and Manual focus modes, not the "M/A" which lets you autofocus and then tweak by hand. I guess that's expected as there is a huge price jump to get to a pro lens like the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II.

I bought this lens for $250 this summer with my D5300. I have upgraded to a D7200 but will keep this lens indefinitely. This lens is perfect for any kind of photography whether you are a beginner, amateur or even semi-pro, or going from one to the next like me. Auto focus is not the fastest if comparing it to the f/2.8 equivalents, but for the cost its pretty exceptional. 55-200mm is amazing range, and I wish there were f/2.8 lenses with that extra 15mm of width. Portraits, landscape, sports can all be done on this lens with the right camera settings. Only problem is low-light settings. Manual focus becomes your only option in that scenario. Conclusion: Buying this used at anywhere less than $200 is an absolute bargain. Durable from drops, easy to clean. Crisp photos and very easy to get used to.

4.0 out of 5 stars This lens taught me the real value of high quality glass.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 26, 2016

Not because it is an example of the above, but in fact the opposite. Compared to my other lenses (couple of primes, a strong UWA, fisheye and mid-range zoom), images from this lens quite obviously lack colour and contrast - looking instead quite 'flat and lifeless', for lack of less clichéd terms. Some things can be compensated for in post production with a cheap lens, in particular barrel and pincushion distortion, but others simply can't. This lens really hit home with me how much I'd taken the quality of my better glass for granted, having first started out with a prime and not a kit lens.

With that being said, I bought this lens with very realistic expectations given the price, and in this respect it doesn't disappoint much at all. As someone who doesn't have a lot of use for a telephoto zoom, my requirements were simply that it was light and small, so it wouldn't be a burden as a permanent member of my kit bag, and cheap, as I can't justify spending as much as I did on my other lenses for something that's at best occasional-use. It fulfils these needs very well.

If you're like me and don't shoot at that end of the range much, or alternatively have a very limited budget or just want to try out a zoom before committing a large sum, then this is a fantastic choice. If you decide you want to get more serious about your telephoto shots then you'll be able to sell it on second hand with little loss.

For those reasons I can happily recommend it as long as your expectations are firmly in check. 4.5 stars would probably be a fairer score if it were possible, but as it's not I can't justify giving it 5 stars simply because the quality gulf between this and my other lenses was a bit more significant than I'd expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Nikon's 300mm DX offering

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 30, 2017

I genuinely prefer this to my Nikon 55-300 lens. That hunts for focus, and is soft at the 300 end. Obviously anyone buying a 200 or 300mm lens is primarily interested in how it performs zoomed in, rather than at the 55mm end. I found the focus on this to be pretty snappy - no problem getting shots of birds in the air. I wish the manual focus ring was bigger and better placed, but the AF is good enough not to need it.

This is an excellent lens if you are on the move (e.g. holiday). It collapses down to a very reasonable size. The f-mount is plastic, but this isn't an especially heavy long lens, so unless you anticipate heavy duty use this doesn't seem a problem.

Ok, so I'm arguing this is better than Nikon's 300mm DX lens. That starts getting soft at about 135mm. Even at 200mm, you don't need to view the photos at 100% to see the vignetting (which is unbalanced, so doesn't even look "artistic"). The killer for that lens is the dreadful AF. In contrast the AF on this lens is fast. The optics aren't perfect, but far less troublesome than the 300mm (including when it is set to 200mm).

I wouldn't recommend it to someone who primarily shoots telephoto because they might wish to invest more. Let's be realistic, this is a plastic lens and that is reflected in the price, but it does the job for me. I mostly shoot at 35mm and 50mm, so this is a nice addition to my camera bag.

I've attached a photo shot at 200mm at dusk. This has been resized, but it isn't a crop. The fox stopped for a second to sniff something, and that was enough time for the AF to lock on. The tail is slightly soft because it was moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic second lens for the price well worth buying

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 14, 2016

What a great piece of kit. if you have just got a cropped sensor dslr and are looking for a second lens look no further. i have a d3300 with a 18-55 kit lens and this complements it perfectly. the lens is very light and compact, but offers a great zoom range second gen vibration reduction and a good autofocus. I considered getting the 55-300 but although it is a good lens the price different is a lot around the £100 more mark for only 100mm of extra zoom. I've also read that it isn't as good at full zoom effectively wasting the extra money. To be perfectly honest the lens performs very well is very light and the glass looks very good quality. the casing feels sturdy if a bit cheap but i guess you have got to save the money somewhere. I'll see how long the lens lasts but having it plastic rather than metal means it is a lot lighter and cheaper make and therefore buy so i see it as a worthy trade-off. i would consider this lens over some of the other cheaper alternatives as it is a great lens for the money considering it is Nikon and not one of their most expensive lenses by a long mile. it also like my 18-55 kit lens has a button to twist it to fold it away smaller which is great also. The diameter of the lens is 52mm which is great as any filters will fit this lens along with the kit lens which is always good.

overall a cracking bit of lens for the money and adds that telephoto ability to your camera that a kit lens normally can't give you. And providing its used correctly you will get results very close to that of lenses much more expensive
