Thoughts on the Zeiss 90mm f/2.8 Sonnar in Contax G mount

To anyone interested in a medium-long fast telephoto who doesn't mind manual focusing:

I recently purchased a Carl Zeiss 90mm f2.8 Sonnar for the Contax G series to help stifle my lust for the M.zuiko 75/1.8. I'll be attending a number of weddings this summer and I think that a LONG portrait lens will come in useful. After 1 week with the lens, here are a few thoughts.

1. This thing looks good! Admittedly, it has sort of a "Frankenstein" look on my e-pm1, but it's not offensive to my eyes and the lens itself is minimalist and beautiful.

Carl Zeiss Sonnar 2.8/90 for Contax G series. Kipon Contax G to mft adapter. Forgive the iPhone pic.

2. Focusing with the adapter (I sprung for a Kipon rather than a cheap knockoff) is not bad. There are a few "catch" points, but I have not had any problem achieving focus, especially using the vf-3. It isn't nearly as smooth as focusing on the OM-series lenses I also have adapted, but I actually find it easier to find critical focus.

3. Sharpness is excellent. Wide open, there is a bit of CA, but there is really no need to stop down for sharpness. Here are some 100% crops taken at minimum focus distance of an ink cartridge box.

Zeiss 90mm, 100% crop at f2.8

Zeiss 90mm, 100% crop at 5.6. Tack sharp.

Zeiss 90, 100% at 2.8 with CA removed and minimal contrast added in Lightroom.

OM 100/2.8, 100% at 2.8. This is generally considered a sharp legacy lens, but it's clearly not in the same league as the Zeiss wide open.

4. Bokeh is pleasing.

Wide open. Shot raw and saturation at +7 in Lightroom to mimic jpeg.

This might be f/4. It was overcast, but the shutter speed (1/320) has me thinking it was not wide open.

Conclusion:

I think I'm really going to enjoy this lens. I'm anxious to get out and see what it is capable in a landscape setting. The famed "3D pop" of Zeiss should make for some nice stitched panoramas.

Happy shooting!

Andrew

Very nice indeed!

Stifle lust for the 75! How much cheaper is this solution then?

I sprung for a mint condition copy which included the original metal lens hood at both caps. Cost was $299. Throw in the adapter for $80 and it's still less than half the price of the 75/1.8.

If you're willing to be patient or don't care about the lens hood/mint condition, I've seen these sell for as little as $160 on ebay. The cheapest adapters seem to be around $40. Metabones also makes an adapter which is said to be quite nice, but it is $140.

The bokeh is nice with this one, congrats!

Looks like pleasing bokeh, and the contrast and sharpness is great. I have found that lens all perform differently on each body, what is a great lens on one system doesn't translate to it adapting well on another. All that being said this combo is a keeper for sure. Keep the images coming as well.

I had a Contax G2 for a couple years in the late 1990s. The 28, 45 & 90mm lenses were all terrific. The AF system sometimes had a mind of its own, though, so I eventually sold the whole lot. Still miss those lenses...they worked so nice (when the focus was right) with Ektachrome 100 and Kodachrome 200 film.

Have fun with your 90mm!

Well bought. I've used mine some on an E-M5 and have found it to be sharp but also producing distinct purple fringing in high-contrast, backlit settings. Correctable in Lightroom so not a fatal flaw.

If you enjoy this lens, consider finding a 45 G-Planar. This was the crown jewel among the G-lens gems, and renders rather differently than the mZuiko 45.

Cheers,

Rick

I had one but sold it. It's a nice, sharp lens, but I just wasn't using it much. Thought I'd use it for low-light event stuff, but it proved to be too long or too short and not fast enough in most cases. Saving up for the 35-100/2.8....

Nice lens! Great image quality! Lust worthy!!!

I've been curious about the Contax lenses, but haven't heard too much about adapting them for M4/3.

I opted for a Voigtländer 75mm f2.5 Color Heliar. It's the older, recently discontinued Leica screwmount lens. Like your Contax it's sharp wide open, but it's quite small and light.

Jeff, your Voigtlander is an even more apt comparison to the Oly and it looks great on the GX1!

Rick,

My initial plan was to get the 45 Planar. Only two things prevented me from doing so:

1. It routinely sells for $100 more.

2. The Oly 45 is available for the same price and would probably get more use.

I'll still be tempted if I see one pop up at a bargain price. The truth is, for whatever reason, I've never really been attracted to the Oly 45, which is how I've managed to avoid buying it over the past couple of years. At this point, I'll probably hold out for Panasonic's offering, which will undoubtedly be double the price.

Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Where did you get it and how much did you pay for it?

This is a great lens for portraiture, landscape, or even wildlife/action assuming you can pre-focus. However, unlike the 45mm there is more than a little bit of CA.

WO it will give you exactly the same shallow dof as the 75mm at f.1.8. It is also quite useable beyond f/11.
