This page describes how to uninstall a device or driver package on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Before uninstalling a device, we recommend physically unplugging the device from the system. If the device is uninstalled before it is unplugged, the operating system may rediscover the device and reinstall drivers for it in the time between the uninstall and unplugging the device.

First, open Settings (you can do this using the Windows+I keyboard shortcut) and type Remove. Select Add or remove programs. If the device or driver package that you wish to remove appears in the list of programs, select uninstall.

If your device or driver package does not appear in the list, you'll need to use Device Manager to uninstall the device. If that device is the only device using the driver package, then the driver package can also be removed via Device Manager. To launch Device Manager, select the Start button, type Device Manager, and press Enter.

Then follow these steps:

  1. Select the View menu and turn on Show Hidden Devices.
  2. Expand the node that represents the type of device that you want to uninstall, right-click the device entry for the device you want to uninstall, and select Uninstall.
  3. On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, if you wish to remove the driver package in addition to uninstalling the device, select the Delete the driver software for this device option. When ready to complete the operation, select OK.

You may also need to restart the computer.

I'm having trouble connecting to my vpn so I think my wireless adapter drivers are corrupt. I've had this problem before on a previous laptop, and reinstalling the wireless adapters drivers helped, provided the driver was deleted from the computer and the latest version from the computer manufacturer's website was installed.

So I need to uninstall and DELETE my wireless driver from my computer. It should not reinstall itself when I restart.

I can't delete the driver software for a driver from my computer. The delete checkbox is missing.

Please create a System Restore save point before doing any of the advice from below, to be able to rollback to your current state in case of a problem.

The free Driver Store Explorer can help to delete drivers:

  • Run as Administrator
  • Click on Enumerate
  • Find the driver in the list and check-mark to select
  • Select "Force deletion" and click on "Delete Package".

If Windows still updates the driver on reboot, you may prevent this by the method in this answer before using Driver Store Explorer. You could also try to immediately install your driver after running Driver Store Explorer.

Why would a technician disable a driver opposed to uninstalling one?

If you uninstall a driver that manages a core part of the computer, such as the CPU, you may end up crashing your computer or making it unusable. If you don't know exactly what the device is, you should not uninstall it. Clicking “Disable device” will cause a warning popup to appear as well.
