Thì quá khứ hoàn thành là gì?

Thì quá khứ hoàn thành (past perfect) thường dùng để miêu tả một chuỗi hành động/sự kiện đã diễn ra trong quá khứ với các mốc thời gian khác nhau theo trình tự.

Theo đó, hành động nào xảy ra trước thì dùng thì quá khứ hoàn thành, hành động xảy ra sau dùng thì quá khứ đơn.

Ví dụ:

• I didn’t have any money left to pick up a taxi since I had lost my wallet somewhere. (Tôi đã không còn đồng nào để bắt taxi bởi vì bị mất ví ở đâu đó.)

• The cat had been trapped for a long time before I came. (Chú mèo đã bị bắt nhốt một thời gian dài trước khi tôi đến.)

• Had some rats stolen the food when I was not at home? (Có phải lũ chuột đã trộm đồ ăn khi tôi không ở nhà?)
