When can I buy a Chevy Colorado 2023?

Midsize trucks are undergoing a renaissance. We've already seen the long-awaited new Nissan Frontier, amd we know a new Ford Ranger will be here before long; now, Chevy is here with the all-new 2023 Colorado.

Fine, "all-new" may be pushing it a bit; GM reportedly torpedoed an all-new midsize truck platform for the Colorado and a Wrangler/Bronco competitor to cut costs. But the new Colorado is substantially enhanced in a way that should make it one of the most compelling offerings in the segment. Your move, Toyota.

The 2023 Colorado has one engine, but three power outputs

Chevy simplified the Colorado engine lineup. It is getting one engine, the "2.7-liter Turbo," which Chevy won't say is a four-cylinder. It comes in a base version (237 horsepower, 259 lb-ft), a Turbo Plus version (310 hp, 390 lb-ft) and a High Output version for the ZR2 (310 hp and 430 lb-ft).

That engine pairs with what Chevy calls the "second-generation" eight-speed automatic transmission, which has been retuned for better performance and downshifting. With GM aiming to go zero-emission by 2035, this may be Chevy's last combustion-powered Colorado.

The Chevy Colorado now has THREE off-road trims

Off-roading is a key appeal for mid-size trucks. Chevy is leaning into that hard with three off-roading trims for the new Colorado — each standard with at last the Turbo Plus engine. The Z71 is an off-roading version of the standard truck with 8.9 inches.

The Trail Boss adds a two-inch suspension lift and a three-inch wider track for 9.5 inches of ground clearance. The ZR2 keeps the wider track (technically 0.1 inches wider), gets a three-inch suspension lift and Multimatic DSSV dampers. It has 38.3º approach, 24.6º break-over and 25.1º departure angles. A Desert Boss package for the ZR2 adds more protection and beadlock wheels.

The Colorado uses Off-Road, Terrain and Baja drive modes. It comes equipped with ten cameras, including underbody cameras standard on the Z71 and ZR2. Chevy is offering more than 200 accessories at launch.

The Colorado will have a cool tailgate

Chevy isn't giving the Colorado the MultiPro tailgate. But the midsize truck does receive a cool new tailgate with useful functionality. The tailgate will get a 45-inch wide and 4-inch deep storage compartment that is water-tight and drainable to use as a cooler.

Up to 17 available tie-downs and bed pockets allow you to create customizable, tri-level storage. The Colorado also has grooves in the bed wall for motorcycles and bicycles and the ability to drive with the tailgate halfway open.

The Colorado is getting a nicer interior

Chevy is upgrading the Colorado interior. The brand says buyers will be able to choose between four unique interior trims. And Chevy is giving the Colorado an available 11.3-inch touchscreen display paired with an eight-inch digital instrument display

Yes, the new Colorado can do truck stuff

Trucks equipped with the Turbo Plus engine are rated to tow up to 7,700 lbs. That dips to 6,000 lbs with the ZR2 and 3,500 lbs with the base engine. Chevy has a new trailering app with Hitch Guidance and Hitch View. WT and LT trim Colorados can handle up to 1,684 pounds of payload.

Price: We expect the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado will have a starting price of approximately $28,000 when it goes on sale in the first half of 2023. The range-topping Colorado ZR2 is expected to have a price tag of roughly $45,000.

The Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup truck gets completely redesigned inside and out for the 2023 model year. Pitched against rivals like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and the Nissan Frontier, this generation of Colorado has a bolder exterior to go along with a completely redone cabin. It will be available in five trim levels: Work Truck (W/T), LT, Z71, ZR2, and Trail Boss.

When it comes to what’s under the hood, the choice is relatively straightforward. A 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is the sole engine option, though it comes in three distinct states of tune depending on the chosen model. An 8-speed automatic is standard across the board, and Colorado customers can choose between rear- and four-wheel drive.

Stepping inside, the interior change that’s immediately apparent is a standard 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that’s positioned in the center of the dashboard. Look for a full complement of smartphone connectivity, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, to also come as standard equipment.

In our previous experience with the 2022 Colorado, we’d noted the truck’s so-so interior quality and cramped rear seat in extended cab format.  The 2023 Colorado’s extra interior tech and modernized cabin will definitely boost the Colorado’s usability and appeal. Helping matters, particularly for tall people seated in the second row, is the fact that the Colorado is now only available in roomier crew cab configuration with a 5-foot cargo bed.

Gone is the previous Colorado’s extended cab layout, which we criticized as being too constricting. It also rides on a wheelbase that’s 3.1 inches longer than the one used in the outgoing Colorado.

The Colorado also comes with an array of improvements to make it safer, not to mention more capable during off-road driving. Standard active safety features such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, front pedestrian detection, and automatic high-beam headlights make this Chevy more competitive with rival midsize trucks. Blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view parking camera, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear pedestrian detection are optional.

For those interested in pickup adventures on unpaved surfaces, the redesigned front of the Colorado has a shorter front overhang that improves its approach angle. The ZR2 and Trail Boss trims get factory-installed lift kits to aid in navigating rugged terrain, plus wider fender flares, underbody skidplates, upgraded dampers, and chunky all-terrain tires.

Up to five available drive modes are at the ready for a wide range of driving needs. Depending on the trim, the driver-selectable modes are Normal, Tow/Haul, Off-Road, Terrain, and Baja. The latter two are geared towards low-speed rock crawling and high-speed dune driving.

For the ultimate in desert driving, Chevrolet is offering the special-edition ZR2 Desert Boss model. It’s fitted with a roof-mounted light bar, off-road bumper, underbody camera, beadlock-capable tires, and a rollover bar mounted behind the cabin.

2023 Chevrolet Colorado Regular Cab Pricing

We expect the base 2023 Chevrolet Colorado Work Truck (W/T) will have a starting price of around $28,000. That’s slightly more than the lowest price trim of the outgoing Colorado, though still highly competitive with competitors like the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger.

The sweet spot of the 2023 Colorado range will likely be the Z71 trim. This comes with features like upgraded seating surfaces, LED lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, and the more powerful version of the 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that delivers 310 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque.

At the top of the Colorado lineup, the ZR2 with its even more potent turbo 4-cylinder and extra all-terrain addendum should carry an asking price of approximately $45,000.

Engine & Transmission

The new Colorado will be powered by three versions of the same 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine found in its full-size Silverado sibling. Each is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The higher up you go with the five available trims, the more horsepower and torque are at your disposal.

While Chevrolet eliminated the three available engines offered on the previous Colorado, including a fuel-efficient turbodiesel and powerful V6, the two higher tunes of this turbo 4-cylinder produce more horsepower and torque than the 3.6-liter V6 used before. Maximum towing capacity actually increases in the 2023 Colorado, from 7,000 pounds upward to 7,700 pounds.
