A couple of watch parties will be held if you would like to have more fun watching the eclipse. Some of the watch parties will be held by Butler University, The Children’s Museum, and The Hamilton East Public Library. They will all provide visitors with eclipse-viewing glasses at no cost. Entrance to these watch parties is free. However, the eclipse glasses will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.

What You Will See on a Total Solar Eclipse

During an eclipse, the moon casts a shadow on earth, as it passes between the sun and the earth. The moon will keep moving in front of the sun until the only visible thing is a small light crescent. The sky will start to darken.

Shadow bands will appear on the plain ground surfaces, often as thin wavy lines. Tiny light specs (Baily’s Beads) will be visible around the sun’s edge as the crescent disappears. The sky will become dark, but there will be a reddish glow on the horizon that looks like a sunset.

You will see the sun’s crown or corona shining around the moon once it’s fully eclipsed. This only happens on a total eclipse and is a spectacular scene. You will also see solar prominences, which will shoot through the sun’s atmosphere. You will see colorful lights coming from the sun’s chromosphere, and you will see bright stars and planets in the moon’s umbra from the areas on earth as well. Once the total eclipse is over, daylight will return.
