In 2023, the free-to-play (F2P) PC game market generated an estimated 24.39 billion U.S. dollars worldwide, and this figure is expected to increase to over 25 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. PC is the second-largest platform for F2P gaming, ranking behind mobile and ahead of the console gaming segment in this regard.

Baldur's Gate 3 was the highest grossing new release in 2023 on Steam, according to estimates from Video Game Insights. The game generated $657 million in revenue in 2023.

Hogwarts Legacy came in second with $341 million in revenue, followed by Starfield with $235 million in revenue despite it also being available day one on Xbox Game Pass.

The remake of Resident Evil 4 came in fourth with $159 million in revenue, followed by Sons of the Forest with $116 million and Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon with $87 million.

The report also shares the top 10 best-selling new releases in 2023 on Steam by units. The top two games remain the same with Baldur's Gate 3 in first place and Hogwarts Legacy in second place.

Lethal Company came in third place by units sold, followed by Overwatch 2 in fourth place. Sons of the Forest came in fifth place, Starfield in sixth place, and BattleBit Remastered in seventh place.

The remake of Resident Evil 4 came in eighth place, The Finals in ninth place, and Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon rounds out the top 10.

Seven out 10 games appeared on both lists, the top games by units only include two free-to-play games, and five focus on multiplayer / co-op. Games without microtransactions dominate the top releases by full game revenue. Four of the games that appeared on the lists are developed by small indie teams of 16 or less.

There was a total of $9 billion in revenue generated in 2023 on Steam by new releases, which is double that of 2019. There was also a total of 580 million games sold.

According to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence, Tencent’s “Honor of Kings” game generated $220 million in sales on the App Store and Google Play worldwide in July 2023, ranking first in the world in mobile game revenue. Revenue

• In July 2023, mobile gamers spent $6.56 billion on entertainment – about the same as a year earlier.
• The U.S. is the largest mobile market ($1.9 billion – 28.7% of total volume). China accounts for 19.7%; Japan has 16.4%. As always, I’ll note that Sensor Tower doesn’t count revenue from third-party Android devices in China.
• Honor of Kings earned $220 million in July and once again took the top spot.
• In second place was PUBG Mobile ($172 million). 62.8 percent of that revenue came from China; the U.S. accounts for 9 percent; India is third in revenue at 7.5 percent.
• Justice Online, a new MMORPG from NetEase, earned $113 million and climbed to number three on the chart. That said, the game is still only available in China.

Downloads

• 4.74 billion games were downloaded in July 2023.
• India accounts for 17.5% of global downloads (833 million); Brazil is second with 9%; the U.S. has 8.4% of the market in downloads.
• Garena Free Fire is the leader in downloads in July, having been said over 21 million times. 27.7% of downloads came from India, followed by Indonesia (9.4%) and Brazil (8.3%).
• Roblox is in second place for downloads (20.4 billion). Brazil accounted for 12.9% of downloads; the U.S. had 12.2%; and Mexico had 7.3%.
