Back in 2000, some of the most-loved and best-received Pokemon games in history came out for the Game Boy Color. Pokemon Gold and Silver were direct follow-ups to the fabled and outrageously-popular Pokemon Blue and Red, which came out Stateside in 1998, not only revitalizing the stumbling Game Boy in one fell swoop, but forever engraining the importance of the Pokemon franchise to Nintendo and ardent handheld gamers alike.

Fast-forward ten years, and now, we have the much-anticipated remakes of Pokemon Gold and Silver. Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, exclusively for the Nintendo DS, are finally here. Now, gamers who missed Gold and Silver the first time around can play them in all of their enhanced glory. Not only are Heart Gold and Soul Silver remade from Gold and Silver, but pieces of Pokemon Crystal were also added in. Those of us who have fond memories of the Game Boy Color classic can relive it all over again.

Our guide covers it all, with a robust basics section, a complete walkthrough that holds your hand through the entire game, and much, much more. The guide is rounded-out by a complete Pokedex, information on Side Quests, tips, and even a TM and HM compendium.

Voltorb Flip is a minigame in the new Pokémon versions, HeartGold and SoulSilver. While it is a game of chance, there are a few things you can do to significantly increase the chances of winning.

  1. First, in any line with a value of zero, mark all cards as Voltorb. Second, in any row or column where the line value and the number of Voltorb add up to five, mark every card in that line with a 1. These cards are not worth flipping over because they are either 1 (which will not help you) or a Voltorb.
  2. Make sure to keep a few things in mind while doing this; see tips below.

  • If you are absolutely positive that a card is a Voltorb, mark it with the circle marking. This will help you determine whether other cards are safe to flip over or not.
  • Keep a close eye on the value of cards you are flipping over in relation to the line value and the number of Voltorb in that line. For example, if you have just flipped over a 3 card in a row where the line value is 6 and the number of Voltorb is 1, then all other cards in that row are either 1 or Voltorb, so you can go ahead and mark those with the 1 marking. Doing this as you go will allow you to narrow down possible choices very quickly.
  • At first, try to pick cards in lines where the number of Voltorb is low.

Thanks for submitting a tip for review!

Make sure to keep on checking and labeling with the 1 marking as you go. Otherwise you won't have an accurate idea of where the Voltorb are, and could end up flipping some over by accident!

HGSS begins with the now-standard introduction to the World of Pokemon speech. Strangely, Professor Oak still handles this task in HGSS, shadowing Professor Elm once again. Oak will ask for your name and gender. Players who choose male will control Ethan, an updated version of Gold, the original male player character from GSC, while players who choose female will control Lyra, a new character who replaces Kris from Pokemon Crystal. Whichever character you don't choose will become a recurring non-playable character, much like in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerlad and Diamond/Pearl/Platinum.

New Bark Town

Your adventure begins in New Bark Town, in your character's bedroom. You can check your computer to read your first piece of Mail, and then you can go downstairs. When you do, your mom (who has a radically different in-game sprite from the Mom sprite in GSC) will talk to you. She'll summarize the menu commands that are, quite conveniently, usually on display on the DS's touch screen in this game: Bag will contain any and all items you find throughout your journey; your character's name shows you a small overview, including number of badges earned and Pokemon caught; Save will do just that; and Options lets you adjust minor gameplay touches like the style of the border found in textboxes. You can then leave your house.

When you get outside, a Marill will run into you. This Marill belongs to the character whom you didn't pick as your own, and whom is apparently friends with your character, and the two of them will then run off. From here, you can go to the Elm Laboratory, which is the building to the left of your house. Notice that a guy with red hair is suspiciously looking into the lab from a window in the corner. Professor Elm will talk to you and ask you to visit Mr. Pokemon on Route 30. Because Elm feels that it's too dangerous for you to go alone, he'll allow you pick one of his Pokemon - Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile - to act as your companion.

Chikorita, Bayleef and Meganium

Hướng dẫn chơi pokemon heart gold	Informational
Chikorita is a pure Grass-type Pokemon and its final form, Meganium, has the best Special Defense of the three Starters and is the sturdiest of the three overall, although its offensive stats are only decent. Chikorita is recommended for players who want a challenge because many Johto Gym Leaders and major characters have type advantages against Grass-types. Cyndaquil, Quilava and Typhlosion

Cyndaquil is pure Fire-type Pokemon whose final form, Typhlosion, has the best Special Attack and Speed of these three Pokemon, making it a great Special or mixed attacker, although its HP and Defense are the worst of the Starters. Beginning players should choose Cyndaquil because a Fire-type has advantages against many Johto Gym Leaders and only a few disadvantages. Totodile, Croconaw and Feraligatr
Hướng dẫn chơi pokemon heart gold	Informational
Hướng dẫn chơi pokemon heart gold	Informational
Hướng dẫn chơi pokemon heart gold	Informational
Totodile is a pure Water-type Pokemon and its final form, Feraligatr, has the best Attack, Defense and HP of the Starters, although it has the worst Special stats and Speed. It has a good Physical movepool and is the middle-of-the-road choice of the three because Water-types are very common in the Wild, yet you'll also need at least one to progress through the game.

You'll instantly notice that, like Pikachu in Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon in Amity Park in Diamond and Pearl, your starter will follow you around on the overworld; one of the most advertised features of HGSS is that the first Pokemon in your roster will appear with your character on the overworld. Elm will then allow you to heal your Pokemon on his machine when needed, and his assistant will give you a free Potion as you leave. Also, a new button is added to your menu: Pokemon, which allows you to view various information for any Pokemon in your party. Once back outside, you'll see the other player character (hereby referred to as "Your friend") playing with Marill and have a short talk with him/her.

If you try to leave New Bark Town, a woman near Oak's Lab will stop you; to progress, you must go home and speak to your Mom, who will give you the PokeGear and offer to save some of the money you'll win from battling other Trainers. The PokeGear will show up on your stylus menu and you can view the world map and your phone numbers on it right now. Once you have the PokeGear, you can now leave your house and explore. You'll notice that your friend lives in the house south of yours while Professor Elm and his family live in a new section directly above his Lab. Talking to the suspicious redhead will get your character pushed away. When you try to leave, Elm will come out from his Lab and give you five Potions, which heal your Pokemon by 20 HP each. Head west into the first Route of the game.

Route 29

Route 29 is the first of many areas in the game where you can encounter wild Pokemon. Because it's the first route of the game, it's relatively straightforward and your starter should be able to take care of any wild Pokemon encountered. You'll find Pidgey and Sentret during the day as well as Hoothoot and Rattata at night: Rattata is a particularly great choice for the early game due to its speed and high Attack, while the other three have better alternatives unless you like their designs. As you follow the path, you'll come to a building on the north side of the route. If you go through the outpost, you'll emerge at the southern end of Route 46, which is a dead-end where you can catch Geodude and Spearow after receiving Pokeballs later.

Back on Route 29, you can find a Potion in the upper right corner of the route, east of the outpost building. Going west from the outpost, however, leads you to the end of the route, near a raised section with an Apricorn tree; because you can't collect your first Apricorn yet, just enter Cherrygrove City to the west. Also, on Tuesdays, you can find a girl named Tuscany toward the end of the route. She'll introduce herself and note that each of her Siblings can be found around Johto on different days of the week. She'll give you a hold item named Twistedspoon that gives a 20% boost to the power of Psychic-type attacks and explain that her siblings have similar items to give out too.

Cherrygrove City

As soon as you enter Cherrygrove, an old man will stop you and insist on giving you a tour of this incredibly small landmark. (Unlike in GSC, you can't refuse his tour in HGSS.) He'll show you the Pokemon Center, where you heal your Pokemon; the Pokemon Mart, where you buy items; a road leading to the next Route; and a generic body of water. Then he'll bring you to his house and give you the most brilliant item in the game: the running shoes. Unlike previous games, the shoes in HeartGold and SoulSilver can be automatically enabled by clicking the shoe icon that appears on the touch screen. With your character no longer walking at a snail's pace, you can now heal your Pokemon and buy healing items at the Pokemart, although Pokeballs are not yet available. When you're ready, go to the road that the old man pointed out; he'll run up, give you the Map expansion card for your PokeGear, and then you can leave.

Route 30

Route 30 is another fairly straightforward route. You'll find your first Bug Pokemon here, and Chikorita players who have SoulSilver might want to avoid Weedle during the day and Spinarak at night because they know Poison Sting. HeartGold players will find Caterpie during the day and Ledyba during the morning here, making this the first route with different wild encounters between the versions. You can find a Potion laying on the ground in plain sight; continuing north, you'll find a house, in which a man will give you the Apricon Box to store the Apricorns that you find on trees. You can take the Green Apricorn from the tree outside of his house and go north, snagging a free Antidote along the way, to encounter a split in the path. The left path is blocked, but that's alright because the right path is a direct, though branched, route to Mr. Pokemon's house. You can find a Pink Apricorn on the tree outside of his house before going in.

When you go inside, you'll talk to Mr. Pokemon, who will give you a Pokemon Egg to return to Professor Elm in New Bark Town, and then he'll heal your Pokemon. Professor Oak is visiting Mr. Pokemon and, impressed at how you've handled your Pokemon, he will give you a Pokedex and leave. The Pokedex records information about Pokemon you've seen or caught; you can view it with the new button on the touch screen. After you leave, Professor Elm will call you on your phone and tell you that something terrible has happened at his lab; he asks you to return as soon as possible. You can proceed south and, once you get to the split in the path, keep to the left and jump down from the ledges to avoid some more wild encounters. When you arrive in Cherrygrove, make sure your Pokemon is healed and enter Route 29. The suspicious red-haired character from New Bark Town will come up and challenge you to your first trainer battle.

Hướng dẫn chơi pokemon heart gold	Informational

This is the first battle against the character who will become your recurring Rival in HGSS. You'll notice that he uses one of the traditional Starter Pokemon of the Johto region; coincidentally, it is always the one that has a type advantage over your starter: Cyndaquil if you chose Chikorita, Totodile if you took Cyndaquil, or Chikorita if you picked Totodile. To win this battle, simply keep using your Pokemon's damaging attack and you'll likely win, particularly because you've had the chance to level it up in wild battles and Rival hasn't. You can also use your Potions if you run into trouble.

After the battle, your Rival will leave. On Route 29, you can snag another Green Apricorn at the tree you saw earlier; by sticking to the dirt road and hopping the ledges, you can avoid wild encounters almost entirely. When you get back to New Bark Town and Elm's Lab, a policeman will be speaking to Elm about how one of the remaining starter Pokemon was stolen, and your friend will run in too; it's quite obvious that Rival has stolen Elm's Pokemon. The policeman will then question you for information and you may name your Rival whatever you want. Elm will be worried about the stolen Pokemon but will cheer up after you show him Mr. Pokemon's egg; finally, you'll be officially allowed to keep your starter Pokemon and are advised to challenge the Gym Leader in Violet City.

The Road to Violet City

There's nothing else to do in New Bark right now, so you can head out. Once you reach the grass on Route 29, your friend will call you over and teach you how to catch Pokemon, just in case you're one of the approximately eleven people in this universe who have never played this series before. After that, you'll receive five Pokeballs so you can start adding to your team. Chikorita players might want to go up to Route 46 and catch a Geodude to help with the first Gym. A Rock/Ground-type, Geodude resists many early attacks and is generally handy to have around. Between the three Routes you've encountered so far, there are several different Normal-, Flying- and Bug-type Pokemon.

Pidgey is a timid bird Pokemon with three stages and rather mediocre stats; Hoothoot is an owl Pokemon that has better Special and HP stats that Physical ones and it can learn a few status and Psychic-type moves. The best early bird Pokemon is Spearow due to its higher Speed and Attack and its ability to learn Flying-type moves early. Between Rattata and Sentret, Rattata is a great pick in the beginning due to its Speed and Attack, while Sentret can be skipped unless you like its design. Caterpie's final evolution and its Psychic-type and status attacks are more useful than Weedle's final evolution and its Poison-type attacks, but Spinarak's evolution is more useful than Ledyba's, so each version has a better exclusive Bug-type in the earlygoing.

After boosting the ranks of your team a bit, return to the split path on Route 30. This time, you can take the left path, where you'll also take part in your first battles against regular Trainers, all of which are Youngsters with Pidgey and Rattata or Bug Catchers that use Caterpie and Weedle. Just stick to your damaging moves and you shouldn't have anything to worry about against these guys. Sometimes, after a battle, trainers will ask for your phone number so they can call to annoy you with inane chatter; you can accept or decline as you wish. Keeping heading north into Route 31, where you can catch your first Grass Pokemon if you didn't pick Chikorita: Bellsprout, which has good Attack and Special Attack but mediocre Defenses. Once you spot the Cuttable tree, make a right turn and then continue north until you approach a cave.

This is Dark Cave, which is completely optional and, right now, uneventful. You can pick up Zubat or Geodude here; keep this location in mind for your Pokedex in the future, as Dunsparce will swarm here. Right now it only has a 1% chance to appear, so don't waste time looking for it. You can stumble around the cave to find a free Potion. Poison/Flying-type Zubat is a pretty weak Pokemon on its own, but it's final evolution is rather useful, so you might want one. Otherwise, leave Dark Cave, grab the Potion outside and continue west. There's a Black Apricorn tree here, and you'll find a PokeBall on the ground next to the last trainer before Violet City: a Bug Catcher with three Caterpie and a Weedle. When you reach the outpost, your friend will walk up and give you the Vs. Recorder.

Violet City

Violet City is the first City in the game; it comes with its own Pokemon Center, Pokemart and Gym. However, nobody is at the Gym right now, so feel free to browse around the city. Just outside of the Pokemon Center is a Juggler who is looking for colored Shards. You can't get these until you have the Rock Smash HM, but this Juggler will give you certain Berries for giving him Shards of specific colors later in the game: Cheri, Pecha and Leppa for Red; Chesto, Oran and Wiki for Blue; Aspear, Sitrus and Iapapa for Yellow; and Rawst, Lum and Aguav for Green.

In the house to the left of the Pokemon Center, you'll find a boy will trade you his Onix for your Bellsprout. This is the first in-game trade of the game; traded Pokemon grow quickly but they will disobey you if their levels get too high and you don't have enough badges to ensure their tameness. Right above the Pokemon Center is Earl's Pokemon Academy, where newcomers can go to learn the basics about Pokemon battles, such as the different status effects and battle mechanics. Now you can head to Sprout Tower on the north end of the city.

Hướng dẫn chơi pokemon heart gold	Informational

To trigger your first Gym Battle, you'll have to defeat the Elder Sage of Sprout Tower. Sprout Tower, a shrine to Bellsprout that has an oddly flexible architecture, is a fairly straightforward building with three floors; occasionally you'll be attacked by wild Rattata during the day and wild Gastly at night. You might want to pick up a Gastly, who is useful because it comes with Hypnosis and, as a Ghost/Poison-type with the ability Levitate, has three immunities to common in-game moves. All of the Sage trainers in this tower use Bellsprout, which only knows Vine Whip, so Cyndaquil and Chikorita players can simply stick with their starter. Totodile players will want to come here with at least one of the early bird (Pidgey, Spearow, Hoothoot) or bug (Caterpie, Weedle, Ledyba, Spinarak) Pokemon.

When you enter, continue up the stairs in front of you. On the second floor, go down the ladder to your right. Back on the ground floor, pick up the Parlyz Heal and continue going around the rear side of the building to find a ladder back up to the second floor. Grab the X Accuracy behind you and keep going ahead to find the ladder to the third floor. Up here, you'll see a Potion to your left and three more Sages ahead; be warned that the optional third Sage has a Hoothoot. You'll then see your Rival battling the Elder Sage, who will tell your Rival that he does not treat his Pokemon properly; Rival, in response, will blow him off and leave via Escape Rope. Take the Escape Rope in the corner and speak to the Elder to start the battle.

Like all of his underlings, the Elder Sage has two Level 7 Bellsprout, but he also has a level 10 Hoothoot. Cyndaquil should burn through all three of these Pokemon with ease; Chikorita can take care of the Bellsprouts with Tackle but will have trouble against Hoothoot, which knows Peck, while Totodile is the opposite case. A Spearow with Peck for the Bellsprout and a Geodude against Hoothoot can lead to an easy win here. When you win, the Elder Sage will compliment your ability and give you TM 70 - Flash, which can be used in the overworld to illuminate caves. You can use the Escape Rope to leave quickly.

With Sprout Tower complete, you may now challenge the Gym. Violet City's Gym, which specializes in Flying-type Pokemon, is the game's first Gym and, as such, it's very straightforward: take the elevator up and walk up to Falkner. You can use the side paths to get around his Junior Trainers, but they only have, respectively, a Spearow and two Pidgey, so you might as well net the easy experience points. When you're ready, challenge Falkner.

Hướng dẫn chơi pokemon heart gold	Informational

Falkner's Pokemon have received a level boost since Gold and Silver, but his amazingly pathetic team of Pidgey and Pidgeotto has not changed. His Pidgey is basically a joke, as it knows no damaging attacks other than Tackle, and you should have no trouble taking it out, even with your Grass- or Bug-type Pokemon. The real challenge here is Pidgeotto, who knows Gust and Tackle and can heal itself with Roost. It's important to note that you can acquire Mareep before fighting Falkner in HGSS; you can go ahead to Route 32 and catch one in the grass just before that man who doesn't let you progress.

If you traded for Onix or caught a Geodude, both of these Pokemon resist all of Falkner's attacks and learn Rock Throw fairly early: level 9 and 11, respectively. Falkner is easy enough that, if your levels are good, your starter should have no trouble against him. Even if you chose Chikorita, you can use Synthesis to heal off Gusts and take advantage of Pidgeotto's Roost to hit Falkner for neutral damage with Razor Leaf.

When you beat Falkner you'll receive TM 51 - Roost, a move that heals the user by 50% of its max HP in exchange for losing its Flying-type for the rest of the turn, and the Zephyrbadge, which allows you to use Rock Smash on the overworld, raises the Attack stat of your Pokemon, and makes all Pokemon up to Level 20 obey you.

After you leave the Gym, Professor Elm will call and ask you to speak to his aide. Unlike in GSC, Elm's assistant in HGSS shows up in the Pokemart, so go there. The assistant will ask you to take the Mystery Egg that you delivered to Elm earlier; after about 2,500 steps with the Egg in your party, it will hatch into a Togepi that knows Extrasensory. When you leave the Mart, you'll have the first of five encounters with a Kimono Girl, five sisters from Ecruteak City who perform Japanese theater. She'll note your strength and you can follow her to reach Route 32, taking the Yellow Apricorn from the tree on the way. With the Zephyrbadge and Togepi's egg in your hands, the man will now let you pass and give you a Miracle Seed, which, while worthless in competitive battling, can be given to Chikorita or Bellsprout right now to provide a 20% boost on Grass-type attacks.
