While traditional pumps are often attached to a nursing bra via a small keyhole entrance in the fabric, the Elvie Breast Pump is a wearable breast pump small enough to tuck into your bra, and is a 100% wireless and hands-free pump (except for when it's attached to the charger).

It's controlled via a smartphone app, and offers new mums the capacity to track their milk production and pumping history, as well as the option to choose between a stimulation mode (to encourage let-down) and an expressing mode. Oh, and there's a whopping 14 different intensity settings, one of which you can mark as a preference so that, in future uses, it knows what intensity to initiate without you having to reset it.

The Elvie has light settings, too, to brighten up lonely night feeds, as well as a more dim mode if your bubba is more photosensitive during a snooze.

Other features to note? Much like competitor brand Medela, the Elvie features a closed system, ensuring that none of your breast milk comes into contact with any components in the motor, nor does it get clogged in any internal tubing. It only has five parts to assemble, ideal for the bleary-eyed early days of parenthood, and it includes a two-year warranty on the motor system, as well as a 90-day warranty on all the washable parts.

Are Elvie Breast Pumps worth it: The GLAMOUR review

Our Elvie pump review (including drawbacks), from GLAMOUR mums and commerce experts in the maternity and post-partum field…

Pros:

  • Multiple breast flange/shield sizes ensures a higher success rate for more women/different breast sizes.
  • The CEO and founder, Tania Boler, is a woman with 15 years of expertise under her belt.
  • Includes free delivery through John Lewis
  • Available in a double electric breast pump package for a discount of over £130 on the second pump
  • Elvie have a dedicated customer service helpline
  • It's whisper quiet

Cons:

  • Made in China so, defacto, less eco-friendly and requires more travel miles from manufacture to consumer.
  • Doesn't pump as fast as some non-wearable breast pumps, according to some users. Though, for many parents, the benefits of multi-tasking will outweigh the efficiency of the product. In short? Consider your priorities before heading to the checkout.

My Elvie review: A first person account - is the Elvie breast pump worth the price tag?

When I discovered the Elvie Single Breast Pump, it changed my pumping experience completely. I wish I had discovered it sooner.

Like most pregnant women, I experienced societal pressure to provide my baby with breastmilk. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that breastmilk is the perfect food for a newborn and recommends exclusively breastfeeding for the first six months, then up to two years and beyond in combination with additional foods. Maternity units promote “the breast is best”. Personally, I had the added pressure to breastfeed after being robbed of the experience first time round. My firstborn son died shortly after birth and I never got the opportunity to feed him.

My expectations about breastfeeding were set by an antenatal class teacher who said babies root for the breast and latch immediately after birth. My daughter didn’t do either of these things. I know I’m not alone in my experience. Shortly after a cesarean section I found myself hand expressing colostrum for hours only to get 2ml at a time and I was in excruciating pain every time she tried to feed.

Unsurprisingly, my daughter wasn’t getting enough milk and so I started to use formula and pump using a traditional electric pump. I was attached to a desk pumping every 2 hours, day and night. The pump made that signature horrendous sound (if you know, you know!) and I felt like a cow udder. It was a slow, laborious and stressful process. After getting a lot of support from a local NHS breastfeeding service, lactation consultant, online, friends and family, I was eventually able to exclusively breastfeed my daughter pain free. However, I wanted to continue pumping too so my husband could bottle feed and I could have some much needed time to myself.

Then I discovered the Elvie and it changed the pumping experience completely.

Elvie Single Electric Breast Pump, £269

This life-changing breast pump is a hands free, cordless and silent pump that fits in your bra. It has a sleek design and connects to an app via Bluetooth.

The strength of the pump can be adjusted via the app or manually using the hub, and the amount of milk pumped can be tracked and saved via the app too. I’ve pumped while driving, shopping, doing admin, housework and breastfeeding with this product. I can now also pump while in bed at night without waking up my husband or daughter because it doesn’t make that dreaded noise and it’s made the experience so much more manageable.

Pumping with the Elvie mostly feels pleasurable - almost like a “flutter feed”. It’s made thinking about going back to work less daunting as I know I can pump at work more easily to maintain my supply and provide milk for my daughter while she’s at nursery.

Are there downsides? Sure, the Elvie does have a few shortcomings. Firstly, it’s pricey (£269 for the single pump at full price) making it inaccessible to a lot of mothers. The battery life is poor (I charge it after each pumping session) and if left unused for a while, it loses its charge. I’ve also experienced leakage and the valve seems to be slow at draining the milk into the bottle, especially with a forceful let down. The suction starts off strong and uncomfortable - it would be better if it started off weaker and could be adjusted from there.

Hopefully, if there is a next generation of the Elvie it will address any teething issues, but in the meantime, it has been a total game changer for me. After a tough start to breastfeeding, my dream to provide my daughter with breastmilk as per the WHO guidelines while being a working mum is starting to look more like a reality.

Is Elvie wearable breast pump worth it?

After testing four top portable and wearable breast pumps alongside standard double electric models, we've concluded that if a wearable pump is what you want, the Elvie Pump is the single best option. We also like the Willow Go, a more budget-friendly alternative.

Which is better Elvie or Medela?

Two of the biggest brands on the market are Elvie and Medela, each with several models available, so we had a look to see which of their electric pumps is best for what. In a nutshell, both offer a good and often similar experience – but if you want something subtle and high-tech, then Elvie Pump is quiet and easy.

Is an Elvie as good as a hospital grade pump?

The Elvie Stride's motors have the same level of power and suction as pumps used in hospitals, and the Stride is optimal for women looking to establish or maintain a breast milk supply via exclusive pumping. These pumps are also a good option for people with milk supply issues.

Does Elvie empty breasts?

First of all, this pump has been a game changer. I love how easy it is to pump hands free. It empties out my breasts better than the spectra that I was using before buying this. Not only can I do things around the house but I have discretely pumped on the go in public and has made my life so much easier.
