Straight out of the TUF gaming alliance, ASUS launches the TUF Gaming FX505DT (FX505DY-online), and for the first time with AMD Ryzen 7 (2.3GHz) as its processor and AMD Radeon Rx Vega 10 on graphics. This model is an iteration of the TUF Gaming FX505GM that houses an i5 or i7 processor. You can read the review here.

The underlying reasoning behind this model was to fully utilize the AMD flagship processors plus graphics and offer the same durability and cooling tech like in the FX505GM. Here’s the breakdown on the new TUF AMD powered FX505DT

Build

As adherent to the gaming series by TUF, this model is of sturdy built and neat finish. The edges sport a diagonal cut, in order to withstand most medium height falls. Lifting it feels light and you don’t hear those plastic creaking sounds on the body when pressure is applied. The sandblasted finish with the X-design on the back look minimalistic and the underside has a hexagonal design that allow no slippage on a slanting surface. I liked the fact that I could open the lid with one hand.

Display

Sporting a 7.18mm bezel along the sides and top, bring the IPS 1920 x 1080 120Hz screen to life. I’m currently re-watching Battlestar Galactica on Prime video, and have to say it viewing it on this machine lacked vibrancy in quality but didn’t look too bad.

On the gaming aspect, I continued my campaign in Anno 1800 and played some Doom too. Anno 1800 is a game known for its rich color palette, and the display didn’t falter there. Doom on the other hand looked as gory as it comes but again looked lacklustre. Though putting it through the Eizo Monitor test provided some great results. The FX505DT scored full marks across the board.

Graphics and Gaming

For this review we got the AMD Ryzen 7 3750H 8-core running at 2.3GHz supplemented with a 4GB AMD Radeon RX 560X. To bolster the graphics and processing handling, this model has the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB (128bit) and 8GB of RAM. So to test its capabilities, Doom and Anno 1800 were pretty suffice. Doom gave an almost steady frame rate, but to push smoothness, I attached the surprisingly slim and lightweight power adapter that allows you to crank up the cooling fans to Turbo mode.

While playing Anno 1800, I had a steam download running parallel, and during some instances on zooming in and out of my island city, saw a fair bit of lag. Its safe to say that when playing graphics intensive games running programs that require RAM is not recommended. Then again, given this case the FX505DT gets a cross here. You can however multitask between browser, music and a game as long as the game itself doesn’t need a lot of resource dedication. I put that to the test playing Warhammer: Vermintide II and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Switching between the pause screen and running apps was smooth and quick. No lags or frame drops on the games either. This is mostly due to the tech running under the keyboard and the 256GB SSD.

Smart tech - Software and Hardware

Which brings us to this. The FX505DT has some powerful cooling, due to its HyperFan tech at the back, dual-cooling for both the CPU and GPU on both sides and its Anti-Dust tech. With the combination of these three, long term use looks bright. To control the way the fans function, and in order to give a user options to customise, the FX505DT comes with an Nvidia feature, the Armoury Crate as pre-installed software.

Besides just a centre display on frequency, usage, temperature, voltage and other metrics, you can tweak several parameters here, like fans speed, Aura sync (RGB keypad color modifier), game visuals (with 7 modes) and loads more. You can even pre-set scenarios based on the games you play commanding the hardware to perform accordingly. And did I mention there’s an smartphone app for you to monitor the system. This I felt was a great addition. It gives you certain control over your hardware, and that goes a long way.

Sound

As I mentioned earlier, the laptop speakers worked well providing great range and clarity for music, movies and games. I did face an issue with the hardware detecting my aux equipped earphones. On disabling the ‘Jack Detection” toggle within the RealTek Audio Console, the issue vanished. I spend almost 22 hours on earphones listening to game sounds, watching movies and listening to my playlist.

The DTS Surround worked effectively. You also get DTS Audio Studio app pre-installed in the system that works some mad magic on sound quality. You get mods like Bass Boost, Volume Levelling, Surround Sound, 3D Fx and an Equalizer. This took sound to a well rounded new level.

Battery

The FX505DT shares the same battery as the Intel powered TUF FX505GM, a 3- Cell 48 Wh polymer battery. Without the charger, with most apps running, like chrome, youtube, word docs, an excel sheet and Anno, from full capacity to 2 percent in about 3 hours 5 minutes. Ah yes, and the fans running in ‘Balance’ or ‘Windows’ mode, as the ‘Turbo’ mode is inaccessible in discharge state. It takes about 45 minutes to bring it back to full charge. All things considered, especially the AMD hardwares’ tenacity for cooling, I felt the charging capacity should have been better. And a good sturdy laptop, that offers longevity it should also have a battery that supports its life-cycle.

Pricing and Warranty

The TUF Gaming FX505DT (DY) with the Ryzen 7, 8GB of RAM, 4GB GeForce GTX 1650 Graphics with AMD Radeon GPU, 1TB + 256SSD, Windows 10 retails for Rs 81,990. The lowest priced model with Ryzen 5 starts at Rs. 59,990 on the website with a direct buy link to Amazon.

Considering the price and the fact that it comes with a 1 year warranty, its mid-way between its contemporary models in the same price range.

Gaming laptops manufacturers have been innovative in pushing hardware to their max capabilities using as little resources as possible. With the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DT you get the impression that once they got the ventilation and dust tech sorted, they jazzed it up with the AMD processor and GPU to capitalize on the cooling. The build is solid and so is the display. It's easily portable, fits like a snug in a backpack and isn't heavy to carry, at least for the things it can do. Gaming laptops of the past that could give you this much gaming power weighed no less than 2.5 to 3 kilograms. The speakers too offer great customization, range and quality. Besides my struggle with the aux port, I found nothing to complain about. It can handle games at full hardware capacity with ease.
