2023 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs Next In Line for Super Cruise Hands-Free Driving Aid

Despite supply chain issues, it looks like Chevy's bringing Super Cruise to its large SUVs.

Finally, it seems that Chevrolet's spreading its coveted Super Cruise hands-free driving aid to yet more vehicles, with the next ones in line being the premium and large Tahoe and Suburban SUVs. This marks the first time any Chevy SUV has gotten this system, which has been available for the Silverado 1500 since the 2022 model year, as well as on the Bolt EUV electric hatchback. Along with the hands-free driving capabilities, the Tahoe and Suburban will both gain new colors and a new accessory grille for 2023.

First up, though, is that Super Cruise feature, which will only be available for the Premier and High Country trim levels on both the Tahoe and Suburban. While it is limited to certain roads and is a "pay-for-play" feature [once the included trial period expires], it gives both SUVs true, hands-free driving even while towing a trailer. While the 2023 Tahoe and Suburban are scheduled to go into production in the summer of 2022, there isn't any firm date on the availability of Super Cruise. As noted in the release from Chevrolet, "Due to current supply-chain shortages, Super Cruise will have limited or late availability. Availability is subject to change."

What Chevy is able to confirm are new optional grilles for the LS, LT, RST, and Premier trims of both SUVs. These grilles will be black with "Chevrolet" script writing, similar to the grilles you can buy from your dealer's parts department to install on your Silverado. The "Chevrolet" script replaces the Bow Tie emblem, reminiscent of the current generation Silverado HD's grille. Chevrolet also confirmed that three new colors will be available for the Tahoe and Suburban: Silver Sage Metallic, Sterling Gray Metallic, and Radiant Red Tintcoat. Only the Radiant Red Tintcoat will be an upcharge while the Sage and Gray Metallics will be no-cost color options. At the time of this writing, Chevrolet has not mentioned the extra cost of the Radiant Red, the new grille, or the cost of Super Cruise. However, we know that the Super Cruise is $2,500 on the Silverado but also requires additional accessories for functionality. It will also require a monthly service fee after the three years of free service which is $25 per month for the Super Cruise subscription or $15 per month when bundled with OnStar's service.

  • The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe adds the Performance model to its lineup at the 2022 North American International Auto Show.
  • The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe Performance boasts 433 hp and 467 lb-ft from its 6.2-liter V8.
  • The new Performance model also features larger front rotors, Brembo brake calipers, and a lower ride height.

The Chevrolet Tahoe RST already has gobs of power and a screaming V8 under the hood, but the company doubles down on performance SUVs with the aptly named Chevy Tahoe RST Performance at the Detroit auto show. Building on the already potent RST model, the RST Performance adds extra horsepower to the 6.2-liter V8, bigger brakes, and a revised suspension.

That said, the 6.2-liter’s performance gains are on the minor side. The Tahoe RST Performance’s V8 boasts 433 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque; the new model is up 13 hp and 7 lb-ft. You might not feel that performance boost in the seat of your pants, but the dyno doesn’t lie. Chevrolet also bumped the top speed from 112 mph to 124 mph.

Joining the extra power, the RST Performance adds larger front rotors that are still clamped by Brembo calipers. Chevrolet finished the front and rear Brembo calipers in a torch red finish that looks good behind the black 20-inch wheels. According to Chevrolet, this brake package brings you to a dead stop from 60 mph in 133 feet, which is a 6.4-foot improvement from the base RST.

Underneath, Chevrolet switched to police-spec springs, retuned dampers, and police-spec suspension calibration. This Tahoe RST Performance is also nearly half an inch lower than the standard RST, which might not mean much on a racetrack but does make the RST Performance look more aggressive.

Chevrolet says that the RST Performance is heading to production before the end of 2022 and will be available on the 2023 model year Tahoe. The extra power and brakes will set you back an extra $8525 on top of your already spendy Tahoe RST.

Do you think this Performance pack is enough to warrant the extra cost? Tell us your thoughts below.

How much does the 2023 Tahoe SS cost?

What's New? The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe is a roomy and comfortable full-size 3-row SUV with seating for up to nine. Prices start at $52,000.

What is the difference between 2022 and 2023 Tahoe?

Not much has changed for the new model year. Only the RST Performance package, new styling cues, and Super Cruise availability are new. Unfortunately, buyers looking for a vastly different full-size SUV than the 2022 Tahoe should look elsewhere.

Can you flat tow a 2023 Tahoe?

You can flat tow a Chevy Tahoe, but only if it has four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. The two-wheel-drive Tahoe does not have flat-towing capabilities, so you'll need to use a flatbed trailer to tow it. A two-wheel dolly is also not allowed, as it may cause significant damage to the vehicle.
