Nicolas Ghesquière‘s Cruise 2023 collection for Louis Vuitton, which was revealed in San Diego last week, not only revived an iconic Carrie Bradshaw moment but also the house’s iconic collaboration with Yayoi Kusama from 2012.

Shortly after the show, the fashion brand announced the second chapter of its partnership with the Japanese artist, which marks its 10th anniversary this year. Back in the early 2010s, the creative covered LV’s leather accessories with her signature polka dots, marking one of the house’s bestselling collaborations to date.

The upcoming release, as previewed on the runway, features a toned-down version of Kusama’s dots, including metallic bubbles from her installation Narcissus Garden comprised of mirrored orbs. Other pieces feature colorfully painted dots in white, red, blue, green, yellow and more.

Here, on this campus for researchers in biomedicine, the human complexion is the great discipline of the most eminent scholars of this world. Logic for the architect Louis Kahn to put the sun, guarantor of all life, at the heart of the Salk Institute, a brutalist building from 1965, designed as a serene concrete monastery for enlightened minds.

At a certain time of the day, when the sunset is blazing, the sun is perfectly framed by the building. It converges in the precise axis of the central fountain. The conjunction of the rays and the shimmering of the water transforms everything into gold, into a golden atmosphere. A single point of contact.

The sun is the guest of honor in the Cruise 2023 collection. It plays an active part in the evolution of this wardrobe where temperature variations set a stylistic tempo. The heat imposes nomadic aesthetics, between sand and cliffs, a supple look. The very particular light of the West Coast invents prisms on clothes full of reflections.
