Crumpler quick escape sling l review

My Nokia 808, Nokia Lumia 1020 and my iPhone 6 have very good camera units. OK I know the iPhone 6 is maybe in terms of resolution not in the same league but it is the best allrounder especially when I capture landscapes with lots of mixed light and clouds.

But I have also a Sony RX100 which is IMHO maybe the only compact camera which can outperform the Nokia 808 and the Lumia 1020.

But when I want to play with depth of field there is nothing better than a large sensor camera like a DSLR.

I have the smallest possible DSLR – the Canon EOS 100D. I tried smaller solutions like the Sony Alpha 5100 but the lenses are either disappointingly bad or very expensive. Canon has a large range of good and cheap lenses. Not to mention than the grip and control of a DSLR are unmatched.

But it’s still big. The 55-250 lens is massive. So I have to carry this whole thing in a bag. The size of the bag also matters a lot. I wanted the smallest possible bag.

I first looked at the Quick Escape 300 but it would be too small for the 100D + 55-250mm STM lens attached.

So I decided to buy the 400. It is still a small bag. The black version is the most boring one IMHO but it was the only one on sale on Amazon for 29 EUR [compared to > 40 EUR for other colors]

The 100D + 55-250mm STM lens fits inside and there is even a little space on top left. The 24mm STM lens fits also in the bag but I have to place it properly. When I’m hunting animals in the woods [noo only for photography purposes 😉 I don’t kill them 🙂 ] and need literally a quick escape of my camera it’s better to have only the camera with the one lens attached in the bag.

The bag is very well built. The zippers are fantastic and there is a security inside the bag which holds the camera inside during unzipping. There is even a rain protector which is attached on the lower end of the bag and can’t be lost. On the back there is breathable material attached – nice.

I tried to get the battery charger inside but it’s too big and doesn’t fit with the 55-250 lens attached. The additional pockets inside the bag are ok only for smaller stuff like memory cards or a smartphone.

One advantage of the small size of this it that the QE 400 fits inside a messenger bag and protects the camera from other stuff inside like small bottles or keys. This way I could carry more lenses and additional stuff and don’t have to buy a large dedicated camera bag. When the action begins you can take out the Quick Escape 400 out of the messenger bag and attach it as a holster on your hips. This is exactly what I wanted to have! You could wear it as a sling bag as well.

One nice detail is that the long end of the belt which is unused can be attached to the belt itself so it doesn’t fly in all directions and doesn’t look like you have a long tail 😉

I’t very satisfied with this bag and can recommend it with larger cameras as well like the EOS 700D. I’m not sure if a 2 digits EOS would fit but for the 3-digits EOS Canon cameras or the cheaper Nikon DSLR the space should be fine even with a big zoom lens attached.

This bag is not for carrying everything with you – it’s for the quick escape to capture the moment as quick as possible and having your camera protected [means not on your neck or in your hand].

Most of us just need a camera bag that just fits our DSLR camera. The more compact it is, the easier we can bring our camera everywhere. The Crumpler Quick Escape 400 Camera Bag is designed to fit cameras with medium-sized zoom lenses [its external size is 20.0 x 23.0 x 12.5 cm]. Check out some images of the bag:

It has an adjustable shoulder strap and you can wear in on waist belt as well as sling it over your shoulder. The case is made from lightweight materials, so you will also feel comfortable wearing it.

The Crumpler Quick Escape 400 is a very compact bag. There is just one big compartment to keep your camera with lenses and all your accessories. The compartment is divided by a tongue divider. It also has pockets to hold your memory cards and other accessories.

The compartment is big enough to hold your DSLR camera. I tried to put in my Canon with 18-55mm lenses and there is still some free space left on top.

The bag is made from 1000d Chicken Tex Supreme fabric which is lightweight, durable and rain proof. Under the back of the bag, you also can find an integrated rain cover that can be used when it is raining hard. The bag is rain-proof but it is not totally water-proof, so you should be careful as well. I am a little disappointed as I couldn’t see the rain cover in my bag, probably it is missing in production.

Overall, this is a good case with simple design, convenient to use and protect your camera very well. I don’t really like the look but if you don’t mind it, this is the good choice.
