1. Đại từ phản thân là gì?

Đại từ phản thân [Reflexive Pronoun] là loại đại từ được dùng để thay thế cho chủ ngữ ở trước đó [có lúc chủ ngữ sẽ được lược bỏ]. Đại từ phản thân trong tiếng Anh mang ý chỉ người/ vật nhận tác động của hành động [khi làm tân ngữ], hoặc để nhấn mạnh chủ thể hành động. 

Ví dụ:

• He cut himself while he was cooking last night.

Anh ấy bị đứt tay [cắt phải anh ấy] khi nấu ăn tối hôm qua. 

• Sarah has to meet the director herself.

Sarah phải đích thân gặp mặt giám đốc. 

Hãy yêu bản thân mình.

2. Vị trí đại từ phản thân trong câu

Đại từ phản thân [reflexive pronouns] thường có vị trí sau động từ, sau giới từ, sau danh từ làm chủ ngữ và ở cuối câu.

2.1. Đứng sau động từ

Ví dụ: 

If you don’t love yourself, you cannot accept love from other people.

[Nếu bạn không yêu bản thân, bạn không thể tiếp nhận tình cảm từ người khác đâu.]

2.2. Đứng sau giới từ

Ví dụ: 

Stop putting pressure on yourselves, you guys look really burned out.

[Hãy dừng việc đặt áp lực lên bản thân các bạn đi, các bạn trông thực sự mệt mỏi.]

2.3. Đứng sau danh từ

Ví dụ: 

Even the teachers themselves cannot solve this Maths problem, it is just too hard.

[Ngay cả bản thân những giáo viên cũng chẳng thể giải nổi bài toán này, nó thực sự rất khó.]

2.4. Đứng ở cuối câu

Ví dụ:

This sounds fishy, I’ll investigate this issue myself.

[Chuyện này nghe có vẻ mờ ám, tôi sẽ tự mình điều tra vụ này.]

3. Cách dùng Đại từ phản thân trong tiếng Anh

3.1. Đại từ phản thân làm tân ngữ 

Khi chủ ngữ và tân ngữ cùng chỉ một người hoặc một sự vật, chúng ta có thể dùng đại từ phản thân để làm tân ngữ, đứng sau động từ, hoặc sau giới từ khi động từ cần. 

Ví dụ:

• The young boys accidentally hurt themselves while they were playing in the garden. 

Những cậu bé vô tình bị thương khi đang chơi ở trong vườn. 

• They had to cook for themselves yesterday. 

Họ phải nấu cơm cho họ ngày hôm qua. 

• John feels very sorry for himself. He could have won the contest.       

John cảm thấy rất tiếc cho chính anh ấy. Anh ấy đáng ra có thể thắng cuộc thi. 

Lưu ý: Một số hành động mà chúng ta luôn tự làm như mặc đồ, tắm rửa… thì ta không dùng đại từ phản thân, trừ các trường hợp đặc biệt. 

Ví dụ:

• He always shaved before going out with his girlfriend. 

Anh ấy luôn cạo râu trước khi ra ngoài với bạn gái. 

• Lily got dressed and got ready for the party.

Lily mặc đồ và đã sẵn sàng cho bữa tiệc. 

Ta có thể dùng đại từ phản thân trong tiếng Anh trong câu sau:

• He dressed himself in spite of his injuries.

Anh ấy có thể tự mặc đồ mặc dù bị chấn thương.

3.2. Nhấn mạnh chủ thể hành động

Khi đại từ phản thân đứng sau chủ ngữ hoặc đứng cuối câu, nó sẽ mang ý nghĩa nhấn mạnh vào danh từ làm chủ ngữ của câu.

Ví dụ:

• We will clean the room ourselves. 

Chúng tôi sẽ đích thân dọn phòng. 

• Anya herself cannot understand her husband sometimes. 

Bản thân Anya đôi khi cũng không thể hiểu nổi chồng cô ấy. 

• Look at the picture! It is so beautiful. Did you draw it yourself? 

Nhìn bức tranh đi. Nó thật đẹp. Bạn đã vẽ đich thân vẽ nó sao?
